Devious, deceitful and despicable of MCA leaders to twist race-blind interest-free education loans by Selangor State Government into a racial issue

Posted on Monday, 22-11-2010Monday, 22-11-2010 by -ec-

Press statement by Teresa Kok, Selangor State Senior EXCO and Member of Parliament for Seputeh dated 22 November 2010 in Shah Alam

Devious, deceitful and despicable of MCA leaders to twist race-blind interest-free education loans by Selangor State Government into a racial issue

MCA leaders Donald Lim, Wee Ka Siong, Fong Chan Onn, Ti Lian Ker and their cyber troopers’ act of intentionally twisting my initiative to increase awareness of Selangor State Government’s race-blind interest-free education loans to wildly criticize DAP for being insensitive to the needs of the Chinese community is devious, deceitful and despicable.

Firstly, MCA is deliberately misleading people with the false data that only 12 students of Chinese background out of 4,000 had received this education loans.  This data is false and inaccurate. The 12 students who had received the loans came from a pool of 742 applications received in 2010, and not the hyper-inflated 4000 figure cited.

Secondly, only 12 students of Chinese background had submitted their application to receive the education loan this year. All 12 applications were approved. Thus, the approval rate for the Chinese, if you must, is 100%.

Thirdly and most importantly, Selangor State Government education loan is race-blind, i.e. there is no racial quota imposed. All students are judged based on their academic merit and family household income.

Thus, it is most disappointing that MCA has chosen to twist this initiative which is beneficial to students of all races in Selangor into a racial issue to attack Selangor Pakatan Rakyat.

It is further despicable and low of MCA leaders to resort to manipulating the truth make themselves out to be such “heroes”. Such race-based tactics merely betrays MCA’s desperation to stay relevant to the Chinese community and their inability to mature beyond this outdated race-based paradigm.

    1. May I know what are the criterias for this loan to be approved?

    2. How state government of Selangor disseminate the information about the existence of this loan to the needy people of Selangor?

    3. “Free education loans”? Does this mean, it is a scholarship instead of “loan”? If this is a loan, how Selangor government going to recover the loan given out? What is the percentage?

    4. If this is a scholarship, what are the evaluation methods chosen to evaluate if the student is performing?

    5. How much loans are given out? (Sorry I forgot about Selangor budget, if this is announced in the budget)

    Dear YB,
    Just wonder who is Devious & Deceitful?
    The figures you have provided speak for themselves.
    Only 12 Chinese applied & approved equals 100% out of 742 applicants!!!
    Believe It or Not!!!

    Question back, how many Chinese are appointed as HM? How many English teachers are Chinese? How many policy maker/syllabus planner are Chinese? HM position is being bought and filled by cronies to enrich themselves with allocation for school development. MCA did anything?

    the total scholarship given doubled from 557 in 2007 to 759 and 936 in 2008 and 2009. So 2009 vs 2007 (full year PR in charge vs full year BN in charge), total scholarship offered increased 68% from 557 to 936.

    the offer to award ratio for the 3 years running from 2007 to 2009 was 60%, 48% and 67% respectively

    successful application to total applications for 2008 and 2009 are as follows

    Malays 67% and 72% – the highest no of applicants, not surprising as the Malay community are heavily represented in the civil service hence they are more informed of the availability of such facilities

    Chinese 85% and 100%

    Indians 53% for both years

    the numbers of Indians being offered state scholarship was at its highest in 2009 i.e.58 followed by 54 in 2006. In this respect, perhaps PR should look into this area – increasing the awareness amongst the Indian community as well as explaining the reasons for unsuccessul applications

    chinese community traditionally rely on self sufficiency relating to educational matters. chinese community also do refrain from engaging civil serivce in a variety of matters. perhaps the malay-centric civil service, and self-reliance of the chinese are partially explain this…

    Dear YB,

    Thank you very much for the clarification.

    It is unfortunate that your clear elucidation will never make news nor appearance in the MCA or UMNO newspapers.

    It is not surprising that the Chinese community did not apply for educational loans from the Selangor state government because they had been conditioned not to depend on the government for money for the education of their children (unless they get exceptionally good grades) after years of governmental indifference under the racist BN divide and rule policy.

    We all know what MCA is good for.
    Take for example, MCA’s UTAR rejected the offer from Mr Koon Yew Yin to build student hostels in the university because the party had to protect that crony who purportedly donated half his land in the outskirt of Kampar to build UTAR thereby making the remaining half extremely valuable. Everyone in the Kinta Valley knows that rent is artificially controlled by this guy and MCA is robbing the students to effectively pay for that piece of donated land.

    The following 4 issues are taboo to MCA or MIC or Gerakan or any other BN’s coalition party in the face of UMNO:

    (1) Education;
    (2) religion;
    (3) Bumiputra’s privileges;
    (4) pigs farming

    So MCA & MIC & Gerakan are only puppets to UMNO and dare not say or do something about the issues listed above. They just sit and wait with their mouth wide open for hand-out from UMNO when come to scholarship.

    In view of that, MCA, MIC and Gerakan have no right to criticize other on matter concerning the above in particular the fair distribution of scholarship.
