An afternoon at the Brickfields Police Station

Posted on Monday, 27-11-2006Monday, 27-11-2006 by Teresa

On Friday I took a few complainants to meet with the new OCPD and his team at Brickfields Police Station. I only knew about the change of OCPD last week. This new OCPD Tuan Rahman was the former Deputy OCPD of PJ Police Station where the infamous Squatgate took place last year.

As I was the one who exposed the issue, and knowing many police officers are unhappy with me for exposing the scandal, I was worried that I might not get the cooperation from this new OCPD. But when I attended the Hari Raya Open House of Brickfields Police Station last Monday, I requested for a dialogue with him and he immediately agreed to see me on Friday after prayer time.

The complainants were frustrated with the slow action taken by the police over their complaints. Two victims told the OCPD and his team about the clues of the crime that happened to them, and they expressed regret that the police did not take their complaints and clues seriously.

The OCPD then expressed displeasure over the attitude shown by the policemen and IO in his district. He instructed the CID Chief of Brickfields to take the information provided by the complainants and take prompt action to nab the suspects. The CID Chief looked tired but still wrote down all the info given by the complaints. We were very impressed with the aggresive attitude shown by Tuan Rahman.

There is one thing we learnt from this meeting, i.e. if we see any crime take place or any suspects, we should call RAKAN COP. The OCPD and his officers talked highly about RAKAN COP. They said RAKAN COP will always try to be at the scene within 12 minutes. The OCPD said he has tested it when a murder case happened at ASOKA Pub at Old Klang Road recently. The number of RAKAN COP is: 03-2115 9999, or sms: POLISKL 32728.

I also brought up the grievances of the operators of pubs and night clubs whose business were supposedly badly affected by police raids. The OCPD said they only carried out raid when they receive information about foreigners work in the entertainment places illegally and when drugs were used. He was adamant this kind of raid is necessary for the police to fight the drug problem. Some pub operators have told me sometimes foreigners and customers were put in the lock-up and the operators had to bribe some police officers in order to avoid raids being carried out or to get their workers or guests released.

From left: S. Chandran (the late Moorthy’s relative), Sassy MP, the late Moorthy’s widow Kaliammal Sinnasamy, lawyer Sivanesan, A Sivanathan (MTUC exco) and lawyer K.A. Ramu.

As I was leaving I saw many photographers and reporters at the guard house of the police station. I was very curious about what’s happening in the police station, then I was told by the press that the DAP people were lodging a police report on a conversion case. I then went into the report lodging building to take a look and I saw my party lawyers Sivanesan and Ramu, together with the late Moorthy’s widow, Kaliammal Sinnasamy, were there.

I then knew that Kaliammal has odged a police report against Hishamuddin for his offensive speech made in the UMNO Assembly, where he was reported as saying that civil court cannot decide on converstion (into Islam) cases, but only syariah court can decide on cases like this. Her lawyer Sivanesan said that Hishammuddin’s speech tantamounts to contempt of court, because Moorthy’s case has been filed to the Court of Appeal and there are few other conversion cases pending at Court of Appeal and Federal Court too.

Hishammuddin has been making too many senseless speeches and has protrayed himself as a racist. He deserved to be sued. I am glad that my colleague Sivanesan and Moorthy’s wife took such action.

I met Tuan Rahman on a few occasions when he was the Deputy OCPD of PJ. He’s quite an officer. Hope he will continue with the good job. Teresa, make full use of this opportunity with this new OCPD.

    Dear Teresa:

Could it be high time, even though it is way too late, to bring up again the plight of the Sri Petaling residents whose houses by now, are worth next to nothing? I sympathize with their misfortune greatly, and I am lucky that my house is in OUG, but it is only less than a 12 minute walk away. If things like these can be done to the people, and the contractors can leave scot-free, how is social justice dealt out? Sorry for the many rhetorical questions.
Do feel free to mail me though. I always enjoy a good cup of pu-er with some intellectual discussion going on =)
