Press Statement by Teresa Kok, Member of Parliament for Seputeh and State Exco for Selangor on 7th September 2009 at Kuala Lumpur
Home Minister Hishammuddin Hussein and Polis DiRaja Malaysia’s blatant double standards in the handling of the Shah Alam Cow-Gate protestors make a mockery of Prime Minister Najib’s 1Malaysia.
On 2 September, Hishammuddin defended the protestors who had marched from the Selangor State Mosque to Selangor State Assembly building. The protestors did so as they couldn’t stand the possibility of having a Hindu temple relocated near their area of residence in Shah Alam, claiming that it would offend their Malay-Muslim lives.
As the event was unfolding, police officers merely stood by and watched as the protestors spouted hate speech, threatened violence, disturbed the peace, and brandished a bloody cow-head which they then kicked and spat upon in utter disdain.
The police neither arrested nor penalised anyone at that point in time. Over one week has passed, and despite video evidence, none of the protestors have been arrested for any offence. Is this the government’s way of putting “People First” by permitting protestors who had threatened bloodshed to continue to walk freely among us? Is this the government’s idea of “Performance Now” by allowing police to take their own sweet time to put a stop to sectarian behaviour?
As for Hishammuddin, he showed such sympathy to these protestors’ cause. He claimed that the protestors could not be blamed as “they had no intention at all” to invoke racial sentiments or cause tension. He even defended their illegal assembly, excusing the fact that they had had not obtained a police permit, saying that they had kept the number of protestors to a small number and that they had not disrespected the Sultan.
(Note to future public demonstrators, Hishammuddin has given his tacit approval for future public gatherings. It’s ok to assemble so long as you do it in small groups and show respect to the Sultan.)
And then he made a statement that is a truly a boon for all future public demonstrators. He said, “In this day and age, protests should be accepted in this world, as people want their voices to be heard. If we don’t give them room to voice their opinions, they have no choice but to protest.”
Perhaps taking a leaf from the “guidelines and advice” given by Hishammuddin, the HINDRAF movement decided to hold a candlelight vigil on 5 September in response, attempting to march from Masjid Jamek to Dataran Merdeka in peaceful protest of the cow-head demonstration. These peaceful protestors carried no weapons or sacrilegious objects. They didn’t kick or spit on any religious object. They didn’t threaten any violence.
Nevertheless, the police were ready for them and had closed off access to the square. In the end, the police arrested 16 of them including Human Rights Party leader P. Uthayakumar. Also arrested were HINDRAF leader and Uthayakumar’s brother, P. Waytha Moorthy’s wife and sister.
Why is it acceptable to march bearing the bloody head of a cow which is sacred to Hindus but not to march carrying candles and roses? Which action truly threatens the peace? Which action is truly seditious and creates fear among Malaysians? The double standards here are palpable.
The lesson from these events is that Najib’s 1Malaysia is mere rhetoric. Even the blind can see the truth that Barisan Nasional leaders practice not 1Malaysia but 2Malaysia, where there is one standard for one group of people, and a second standard for a second group of people.
Until the full force of the law is brought upon the Cow-Head protestors, it will remain clear that Najib’s 1Malaysia promise of “People First. Performance Now” is mere sloganeering with no substance.

The rakyat will have to bear with such nonsense (there is no choice at the moment) until GE13. Then, the rakyat must send them to hell.
you are sooooooo right, we are in a 22222malaysia policy where there are double standard of charging.
….though Civil Disobedience calls for improving rather than abolishing government – “I ask for, not at once no government, but at once a better government”[4] – the direction of this improvement aims at anarchism: “‘That government is best which governs not at all;’ and when men are prepared for it, that will be the kind of government which they will have.”[4]
