In the afternoon of 27 June 2025, the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) delegation visited Selwyn District. Selwyn is in the greater Christchurch, it is 45 minutes drive from central Christchurch.
The outlook of the district council building is like a wine barrel.
The visit was arranged by Mr Tony Gan, a Malaysian diaspora in Christchurch.
The mayor of Selwyn is Sam Broughton, a 43-year-old young man. He gave us a presentation about the district. He told us this is the fastest growing district in New Zealand, after the disastrous earthquake in Christchurch in 2011.
The council members are working hard to provide affordable housing and various facilities for the growing population. After the briefing, we were taken by the councillors to make rounds in Selwyn district.
It is interesting to see the new housing estate in Selwyn area. Each terrace house with 3 bedrooms and two carpark costs NZD700k.
