The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) delegation came to Christchurch after our visits to Parliament and some government agencies in Wellington.
We called on the mayor of Christchurch, Mr Phil Mauger on Friday morning, 27 June 2025.
The mayor shared with us the rebuilding, recovery and regeneration of Christchurch after the disastrous earthquake in 2011.
I came to Christchurch in 2006. The city was quiet at that time. But after more than a decade of restoration of Christchurch, the city has become so different and so alive today.
The mayor told us the federal government has pumped in lots of money to rebuild the city after the massive earthquake. The government even bought over land of the earthquake victims, to make it easier for the city council to rebuild the city.
In top of that, the insurance companies and many donors have contributed to the reconstruction of the city too.
As the driver took us around the city, I saw murals on many shops. The driver said after the disaster of earthquake, the mayor had ordered artists to paint murals in the city, in an effort to change the depressing atmosphere in the city.
As we walked around the city, we saw many restaurants of different countries, we can get the food of Korean, Japanese, Indonesian, Indians etc. I believe the immigrants have played their parts in rebuilding the economy and the city of Christchurch too.
