Seputeh MP Teresa Kok criticises MCA for not having questioned nor stopped policies imposed by Umno when it mattered, if they felt it was wrong.
PETALING JAYA: The MCA will never shed its image of being a “lapdog” to Umno in the Barisan Nasional (BN) as long as they don’t speak out when it matters, a DAP leader said.
Responding to DAP-bashing speeches made by MCA president Liow Tiong Lai and other MCA leaders during MCA’s 64th annual general assembly yesterday, DAP vice-chairperson Teresa Kok said the Chinese party would never regain support at this rate.
“Isn’t it apparent that MCA doesn’t have principles and it has never played its proper role in the BN government.
“It was and always will be the ‘lapdog’ of Umno in whatever circumstances,” she said referring to comments made by Liow against former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
“Why didn’t MCA criticise and stop certain policies from being implemented by the BN government led by Mahathir during his time, but they only criticised Mahathir after he left Umno and BN ?
Kok added this showed that MCA doesn’t have principles and it has never played its proper role in the BN coalition government.
In his speech, Liow said Mahathir’s legacy which has burdened the people includes tolls, massive losses at Malaysia Airlines, Perwaja, Bank Negara Malaysia’s foreign exchange (forex) trading, lopsided concession agreements, privatisation to cronies and nepotism.
He also criticised Lim Kit Siang for making a U-turn in working with Mahathir, accusing DAP of being “consistently inconsistent”.
“Unlike DAP, MCA is consistently consistent. BN is consistently consistent,” Liow had said.
Kok, who is Seputeh MP, said it was easy to rebut Liow’s accusation against Lim and DAP.
“DAP leaders have never retracted our statements made against the Mahathir-led BN government in the past.
“Both Mahathir and the DAP leaders are working for the future. Both parties are setting aside our previous differences and working together for the sake of saving Malaysia from a corrupt and kleptocratic regime.
“We are working for the future and not the past,” she said.
Kok also reminded Liow that the next general election would see Pakatan Harapan take on BN-PAS.
“He said the Chinese voters were misled by the DAP in the last general election and he urged the Chinese voters to support the MCA to deter a ‘theocratic regime’ in ruling Malaysia.
“I wonder whether Liow is suffering from selective amnesia, because PAS is collaborating with Umno to pursue its Islamic agenda,” she said.
She was referring to Umno’s support for PAS in the latter’s effort to enhance shariah laws through an amemdment in Parliament.
“Even Liow has said before that ‘Umno and PAS are flirting with each other’ in the Malaysia Chinese Youth Summit on Oct 20, 2017,” Kok said, adding it shows that Liow is contradicting his own statements.
