KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 24 — PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang said today the Islamist party will organise a mammoth rally to prove it had the support of Muslims for his parliamentary motion to improve the Shariah Courts.
The Marang MP also said it would include the participat ion of Muslim political parties as well as non-Muslim groups.
“PAS will organise a mega peaceful rally to represent Muslims from various political parties and NGOs, including non-Muslims to proof their support to this Bill. Wait and see,” Hadi told a press conference at Parliament here.
Hadi was coy on the details, but indicated that the rally may be held next year.
“Not necessarily [this year]. We still have a period till March, when the next parliament session happens.
“We need to give explanation throughout the country and we have to meet with Muslim NGOs,” he said, adding that dialogues with non-Muslims will also be conducted.
The Terengganu lawmaker also urged Muslims to remain cordial with non-Muslims to improve support for his Shariah Bill.
“I ask for Muslims to ensure have a good relationship with Muslims. What is important is that we need public support. We will have negotiations with all parties to ensure the mega rally is held ideally,” he said.
Hadi earlier today tabled a motion on his amended private member’s Bill to increase the Shariah Courts’ punitive powers by at least tenfold, but deferred its discussion to the next Dewan Rakyat sitting.
Today is the last day that the lower House of Parliament will sit this year.
