KOTA BARU, June 2 — PAS today approved without debate several motions urging the party to reconsider its relationship with PKR, leaving the final decision in the hands of the influential Syura Council.
PAS information chief Nasrudin Hassan revealed that the muktamar received at least three motions to review ties with PKR.
Among the reasons for the review are PKR’s relationship with Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah), a party formed last year among PAS’s ousted progressives, and the former’s alleged penchant for making decisions without first consulting its Islamist ally.
“These motions are passed without debate and is then referred to the Syura Council for decision,” Nasrudin said.
“If the Syura Council feels there is benefit to Islam, the cooperation will continue. If it does not feel so, the cooperation will stop,” he added.
Yesterday, the PAS Muslimat wing approved without debate a motion at their own muktamar on cutting ties with PKR.
That motion was bundled together with two other motions from divisions on the party’s relationship with PKR, and will be referred to the Syura Council.
During the party’s annual gathering last year, the motion to cut ties with the DAP was also approved by the party without debate.
The decision later led to the breakup of the Pakatan Rakyat (PR) coalition and the subsequent formation of a new opposition pact among DAP, PKR and Amanah.
PAS has since retained a working relationship with PKR, largely due to the political makeup of the Selangor administration, where PAS leaders still sit in the state executive council.
