KOTA BARU, June 1 ― The women’s wing of PAS approved a motion today to sever ties with political ally PKR, just a year after cutting all links with DAP.
The motion, proposed by the wing’s Kedah delegation, cited PKR’s cooperation with PAS offshoot Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) as among the key reasons.
“Following the Kajang Move and the move to oust Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim as Selangor mentri besar, PAS’ stand and opinion has not been respected while the opposition pact was tainted as things were done outside PAS’ knowledge,” the motion said.
“Even though some PKR leaders are still respectful of PAS, the perception is that PKR makes decisions without consulting PAS,” it added.
Next, the motion will be raised with the party’s powerful Syura Council for further action.
During PAS’ muktamar last year, the Islamist party approved a motion to sever ties with the DAP following the two former allies’ fallout over key ideological differences such as on hudud.
The decision resulted in the breakup of Pakatan Rakyat (PR) and months later, Pakatan Harapan was formed among PKR, DAP and Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah), a new party established among leaders of PAS’ progressive faction.
PKR and PAS, however, remained on friendly terms, largely due to the political makeup of the Selangor administration, where PAS leaders still sit in the state executive council.
