KUALA LUMPUR, July 22 — In the wake of opposition lawmaker Tony Pua’s criticism of 1 Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB), a former DAP member has accused the Petaling Jaya Utara MP of parking RM3 million abroad in his wife’s name.
Tony Tan Chee Chon, a former personal assistant to DAP vice-chairman Teresa Kok who parted ways with the party under a cloud in 2007, claimed to have documents to back his allegation.
“Pua always asks about government accounts and say they must be transparent, but he should first declare his wealth,” he told a news conference here that had been organised by the Ramesh Rao Krishnan Naidu, the man behind the recent controversial 1MDB-Sarawak Report video confession by Sarawakian Lester Melanyi.
Tan promised to make public his documentary proof next week if the MP refused to reply his allegation.
“We have proof but we do not want to reveal it till Pua answers the questions we put forth today,” he said.
In an immediate response, Pua challenged Tan to disclose the documents as he was not answerable to him.
“Go ahead, ask him release the documents if he has them. He doesn’t have to give me time to respond to him, just go ahead and give out the documents,” Pua told Malay Mail Online when contacted for comment.
The DAP national publicity secretary said his wife was not involved in politics and chided Tan for dragging her into his allegation.
Pua has come under fire from several Barisan Nasional (BN) politicians and groups associated with them over his questions on troubled 1MDB.
The pro-BN groups and individuals have accused the opposition and media of trying to tarnish 1MDB’s reputation and that of the Najib administration with their news reports.
