Teresa Kok’s Defamation Suit Against Chamil Wariya, Utusan Set For Hearing On Oct 5
KUALA LUMPUR, April 30 (Bernama) — The High Court here today set Oct 5 to hear a RM30 million defamation suit filed by Seputeh Member of Parliament Teresa Kok Suh Sim against Malaysian Press Institute Chief Executive Officer Datuk Chamil Wariya and Utusan Malaysia Sdn Bhd over an article published in a Malay daily.
Justice Datuk Lau Bee Lan fixed the date in chambers.
In the suit filed on Dec 12, 2008, Kok, 44, who is Selangor state executive council member, named Chamil, the contributor of the article that was published, as the first defendant, and Utusan Melayu Sdn Bhd, which published the article, as the second defendant.
In her statement of claim, Kok alleged that the article’s contents implied that she was a racist, a religious and racial bigot, untrustworthy person and a bad politician.
She also claimed that the article in the Mingguan Malaysia Sunday edition with the heading, “Politik Baru YBJ” also implied that she was a chauvinistic politician who was anti-Islam and anti-Malay.
