Media Statement by DAP Parliamentary Leader and MP for Ipoh Timor Lim Kit Siang at Sandakan Airport on Monday, 4th July 2011:
King’s concern most welcome – call on Najib to meet with Berish organisers as the first positive government response to popular concerns for free and fair elections
————————-
The Yang di Pertuan Agong’s concern over the “binge of madness” in the country arising from the July 9 Bersih 2.0 peaceful rally for free, fair and clean general elections is most appropriate and welcome.
Lets not doubt the loyalty and patriotism of Malaysians who want to see free and fair general elections – which is the highest form of love, loyalty and patriotism to Malaysia.
As a first positive step in response to the Yang di Pertuan Agong’s concern and call that Malaysia must always conduct itself as “a civilised society” grounded on consultations with all stakeholders in the country, the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak should meet with Bersih organisers to address legitimate nation-wide concerns about free and fair elections which could be fully taken account in the forthcoming 13th General Elections.
As a second positive step, the Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin should lift the ban on Bersih 2.0 and release all persons, including the MP for Sungei Siput Dr. Michael Jayakumar, detained in the past week of high-handed “madness” over the Bersih 2.0 rally.
-Lim Kit Siang
Agong should just grant an audience with Ambiga and Bersih2.0 Group to hand over the memorandum.
Can TYT do such a simple job for malaysian his rakyats?
Just like to Bible issue that was resolved by PM Najib when he met with the church leaders, by the same token, he should convene a meeting with leaders of Bersih in order to resolve this impasse. As a wise leader of this country, PM Najib should allow Bersih leaders to meet the Agong on July 9th. If this done then the Bersih rally can be called off.
Since PM and HM do not respect YDP Agong, indirectly they are telling Bersih to do the same. If they do not provide the stadium as agreed and are deliberately delaying and not responding, Bersih should not fall into their game plan but proceed with the original plan of the street rally. Good suggestion, Merdeka Square is the best alternative. No need to ask for permission.
On another note, you cannot trust these UMNO politicians…perhaps, the dead ones!
Now they are playing with Bersih, passing the ball around and try to make a fool of the Bersih organizers. There is always another day to confront these UMNO political dickheads!!
Like kerala mamak kutty commented, the last resort is to go back to the street. This provisin is enshrined in the Federal Constitutions, guaranteed the right of citizens to hold peaceful demonstrations in closed or opened areas!!
