Today, Malay Mail carried news of my statement criticising Selangor Police Chief Khalid Omar for wasting prescious resources investigating Ean Yong when they should be pursuing genuine criminals terrorising our neighbourhoods and scaring away investors.
If the police can be “obstructed” from doing their jobs by Ean Yong’s simple statement, how will the police stand a chance against the genuine criminals bearing knives, guns or worse?
No ‘criminal intimidation’ investigation on Yong
Wednesday, January 6th, 2010 13:28:00SHAH ALAM: Selangor State Executive Councillor Ean Yong Hian Wah is being investigated for obstructing a civil servant from discharging his duties and not for criminal intimidation, Shah Alam police chief Assistant Commissioner Nor Azam Jamaluddin, said yesterday.
Nor Azam told The Malay Mail that they did not expect to call any witnesses to assist investigations. He declined further comment.
Yong was hauled up in connection with his statement on Christmas Day, which called on police to stop investigations on Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng for suggesting his (Yong’s) political aide, Teoh Beng Hock, was murdered.
Yong spent 50 minutes at the Shah Alam police headquarters giving his statement, accompanied by his lawyer, Lim Lip Eng, who is also Segambut MP.
Asked whether he was being investigated for sedition, Yong said he did not know then. If convicted under that section, Yong faces a fine exceeding RM1,000 or imprisonment of less than three months or both.
Seputeh MP Teresa Kok, in her blog posting, claimed that Yong was being investigated under Section 506 of the Penal Code.
“Selangor State police chief Datuk Khalid Abu Bakar should be given the rap for wasting PDRM’s limited and precious resources in investigating Selangor State Senior Exco Ean Yong Hian Wah, under Penal Code Session 506 for criminal intimidation, only because he urged police to stop investigations of Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng for sedition.
“In his statement, issued in Malay, Ean Yong had written: “Saya menyeru pihak polis supaya menghentikan siasatan terhadap Guan Eng dengan serta-merta. Rakyat mahu kerajaan Barisan Nasional untuk mengembalikan maruah dan kebenaran kepada Teoh Beng Hock.” (I urge the police to put an immediate stop to the investigation on Guan Eng. The people want the Barisan Nasional government to restore integrity and truth to Teoh Beng Hock.)
“It is laughable for PDRM to have interpreted this statement by Ean Yong as being criminal intimidation because nowhere in his statement did he threaten PDRM in any way.”
