DAP re-elections: Who’s in, who’s out

Posted on Thursday, 23-11-2017 by -ec-

The two individuals who are no longer in the CEC are former committee member Boo Cheng Hau, who obtained 384 votes, and late chairperson Karpal Singh, who died in a car accident in 2014.

Despite being deceased, Karpal still received 43 votes.

The newcomers replacing Boo and Karpal are Ronnie Liu, with 688 votes, and V Sivakumar, with 586 votes.

After the elections, the new CEC dropped most of the leaders appointed to the committee in 2013.

Those dropped include Kepong MP Tan Seng Giaw, Penang deputy chief minister II P Ramasamy, Arrifin Omar, Kota Kinabalu MP Jimmy Wong, Vincent Wu and Leong Ngah Ngah.

Kapayan state assemblyperson Edwin Bosi had also been appointed to the central committee in 2013, but he quit the party in August.

They have been replaced with new appointees, namely Tengku Zulpuri Shah Raja Puji, Sandakan MP Stephen Wong, Jannie Lasimbang, Ayer Keroh state assemblyperson Khoo Poay Tiong, Serdang MP Ong Kian Ming, DAP Youth chief Wong Kah Woh, Selangor state assembly speaker Hannah Yeoh, and Damansara Utama rep Yeo Bee Yin.

Thomas Su, and John Brian Anthony were reappointed to the central committee.

When asked about the reshuffle of appointees, DAP organising secretary Anthony Loke said that this was an effort to “rejuvenate” the party by adding in “fresh blood.”

Newly re-elected DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng, meanwhile, told a press conference that the new CEC will have the difficult task of preparing for the 14th General Election.

DAP grudgingly held the re-election on the instruction of the Registrar of Societies, due to supposed problems in the delegates’ list used for the 2013 re-election.

In 2013, DAP had voluntarily held a re-election, after an Excel spreadsheet error affected the results of the initial election held in 2012.
