The former DAP member is unhappy with the way police are investigating his case.
PETALING JAYA: Former DAP member Hew Kuan Yew is going on a hunger strike in protest against police handling of his case.
Hew’s lawyer, Chan Jing Hui, said his client will go on a hunger strike from today because “we are not satisfied with how the police are investigating this case”.
“They only took down his details and didn’t conduct any checks.”
He added that Hew was diabetic and the meals served in detention were not suitable for him.
The controversial figure and former DAP member was nabbed yesterday at the Comic Cultural Museum, Komtar, Penang, where he serves as a curator.
According to China Press, he was taken to Johor to facilitate investigations into his Facebook comment where he was alleged to have insulted the prime minister and his wife.
The post has been shared 5,000 times on Facebook.
He was remanded for four days by the Kulai Magistrate’s Court today. Twenty of Hew’s supporters were at the court.
Hew, popularly called “Superman” for his penchant for wearing T-shirts of the superhero, thanked his supporters for coming after being taken out from the court.
“Bring some books for me or else I would be bored in detention,” he was reported as saying.
China Press reported that Hew arrived at the court at 8.22am today, donning the purple police lock-up attire and was barefoot.
His case will be investigated under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act and his detention is expected to end on Friday.
DAP MPs Lim Kit Siang, Lim Guan Eng, Ngeh Koo Ham and Teo Nie Ching have questioned the reasons for his arrest.
