A Sunday With Punjabi Suit :-)

Posted on Friday, 24-10-2008Wednesday, 29-10-2008 by Teresa

I wore a Punjabi suit to attend a recent Hari Raya open house in Klang. All these gentlemen are strong men behind Selangor state exco member Dr Halimah of PAS.

You must have seen me in photos wearing baju kebaya or baju kurung the past few weeks. I received comments on my Facebook that I have “over-done” it and that I did not wear the costumes of other ethnic groups 🙂

Haiyah, the nation is celebrating Hari Raya for the whole month, I have to attend so many Hari Raya open houses, how not to wear baju Melayu in all those functions, particularly the open houses organised by my office?

On 18th October, last Sunday, I wore a Punjabi suit the whole day. This was because I had to attend a function at the Sikh Temple in PJ in that afternoon and I was requested to wear the Punjabi suit for the function. As it turned out, I wore the Punjabi suit to attend church service in the morning, then went to two open houses, including the one organised by state exco member Dr Halimah in Klang, and then to the Sikh Temple function.

I was invited by Dr Halimah to speak about my ISA detention and clarify certain misconceptions on stage in her Hari Raya open house. So, I took the chance to “politicise’ that hari raya function.

This is the banner outside the Sikh temple at PJ. The Sikh temple is called Gurdwara Sahib

I was invited to speak to all the Sikh participants and their guests. All men and women have to cover up their hair.

See, I wore a ‘tudung’ when delivering my speech. The man wearing the blue turban on my left is state exco member Dr Xavier, the man in blue shirt and white turban is none other than Gobind Singh 🙂

There was a big crowd at the compound of the Sikh Temple. All of them gathered there to enjoy fresh chapati and Punjabi food.

This is the common kitchen. All these women are volunteers helping at the function. They are making chapati together. The gentleman next to me is the Indian High Commissioner in Malaysia. He was very impressed with the Sikh practices in the temple.

Look at the way they make chapati. They can make many pieces at one time.

The Sikh Temple provides free meals, meaning they serve free chapati to whoever came to their temple to eat.

This was the first time I was in a Sikh Temple. I find certain practices in the Sikh temple quite similar to practices in mosques.

All Sikh temples have the design of “dome” on top of their temples. Besides, we have to take off our shoes and cover our heads before we enter the temple. One difference is Sikh temples serve vegetarian food and men and women are not segregated.

    YB,

Guess you’re going to wear Sari to attend this year’s Deepavali open house. You look natural in the Punjabi suit. Why didn’t Puchong MP YB Govind Deo Singh accompany you to the Sikh Temple?

HAPPY DEEVAPALI to all Indian Malaysians.

YB Teresa, you are truly a people’s ‘wakil rakyat’ aptly dressed for all occasions and all multi-racial festivities. Looking smart too. You are a classic example and role-model for the realization of a ‘Bangsa Malaysia’!
Keep up the good and wonderful work.
To all Malaysians of the Hindu faith:
    “HAPPY DEEPAVALI 2008”!

Malaysians love to care for the penny and miss out the pound. Dressing of a politician is more important than his or her integrity / performance / sense of feeling for the community.

There is also double standard. If all the chaps want Teresa to dress up in all kind of costume to show that she is for all races, how come we don’t ask Badawi, who claims to be PM for all Malaysians, to dress up in traditional Malay, Chinese, Indian, Dayak, Bajau, Murud, Jakun, Sikh, Portugese, KadazanDusun, Melanau etc attire?

I rather have a PM who dress like PeeWee Herman or Ronald MacDonald as long as he or she cares for Malaysians and do the right things for Malaysians.

What’s next? Teresa cannot colour her toe nails?

    YB,

you are such a role model as a malaysian in a malaysian way. we really need better national unity. the day when you see a greater diversity in attendance and participation in these functions, we will be getting closer to achievement of real racial harmony. with leader such as you, i think we are not that far from success.

rich cultural diversity is our strength. do not make it as a political burden. and condemn those who wants to abuse it.

p/s: how do you plan to spend the monies after you have won all the lawsuits? one suggestion, you can really have all types of traditional costumes for all types of functions. you need a wardrobe that could dress you up for a long long long time and we malaysians are willing to pay for it. you deserve it as a performing leader. 🙂

You are doing a great job with the different communities.
This will definitely shut the mouths of your critics!
Hope you’ll not put on too much weight with the many functions you attended!
    However, do remember to exercise.

look guys, politics in malaysia since march 8 this year has changed. That’s why MCA and MIC has almost vanished in Selangor because people’s demand on the WRs is enormous. They don’t want people who are sub servient to another party to serve them. They want direct representation and no excuses after excuses. We all know very well that the previous administration under khir toyol was run by umno only.

Give our WR a breaklah, so they can do better in future.

    Hi Ma’am,
The abilty to dress for the occasion shows your adaptabilty and affinity for change. I like that. Many people can’t do that. I wish on day I have the chance to wear a songkok. It shows a common identity for Malaysians and it has nothing to with domination, at least to me I don’t look at it this way but again people fight for and against it for many wrong reasons.
My wife also have a baju kurong and she looks so lovely in it.

    Cheah
