DAP said it is shocked at PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang’s use of a shariah law principle to defend embattled Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, who has been accused of receiving billions of ringgit in his personal accounts.
Its secretary-general Lim Guan Eng said it was shocking to see reports that Hadi had said four witnesses should be presented to support the allegations made against the Barisan Nasional leader.
“If you need to present four witnesses for a corruption case, then everyone caught for the alleged offence will walk away free.
“Even other Muslim countries do not go by such a law. They can use documents to prove corruption. In this age, transactions are all made over the computer,” he told a press conference at his Komtar office today.
Lim, who is Penang chief minister, said Hadi’s interpretation of the law was an excuse to defend Najib, just like PAS spiritual leader Datuk Dr Haron Din, who described the allegation against the prime minister as illogical.
“This is the new PAS leadership now. It has a new stand and a new image. PAS leaders now defend the PM,” Lim said.
Lim reminded PAS that they could not be playing both sides.
“The PAS secretary-general (Datuk Takiyuddin Hassan) said they were not defending Najib, but were still against 1MDB.
“This is a case of slapping your own mouth. You have one side slamming Najib and the other defending Najib… you can’t support Najib when you are against 1MDB,” he said.
“You must choose and be clear. You cannot have both. But we can see that PAS is with the PM.
“The people can also judge for themselves what PAS, under its new leadership, is like now,” he said.
Yesterday, news portal Astro Awani Online quoted Hadi as saying that Najib was no angel, but just a man, and the allegations against him should be supported by four witnesses.
“Our stand is an Islamic stand. If the sodomy case against (PKR de facto leader) Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim should have four witnesses, then it should be the same for Najib,” he reportedly said, in reference to the report by Wall Street Journal that RM2.6 billion from 1MDB was allegedly channelled into the prime minister’s personal accounts before the 2013 general election.
Najib has since denied the allegation and is mulling legal action against the newspaper. – July 8, 2015.
