It appears that Pakatan-administered states will only be able to announce the dissolution of their respective legislative bodies tomorrow.
Kedah Menteri Besar Azizan Abu Bakar has said that his audience with the Kedah Sultan, who is also the reigning Agong, is scheduled for tomorrow.
Selangor Menteri Besar Abdul Khalid Ibrahim had already received consent from the Selangor Sultan to do so and an official ceremony will be held at 2.30pm tomorrow.
At the time of writing, Kelantan has not made an official announcement on its plans.
Meanwhile, Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said he was meeting the Penang governor tomorrow to seek his permission.
“I received a fax from Najib – who said he had met with the Agong – and according to the constitution, he has the permission to dissolve Parliament to pave way for elections,” Lim told reporters after attending the state’s last executive council meeting.
“He asked my cooperation to dissolve at the same time. And if this happens, the relevant documents will be sent. The state exco (has) no problem with having the election (at the) same time with Parliament,” he added.
“Therefore, I will meet the governor tomorrow at 9.30am to ask him when we can dissolve the state assembly.”
‘Consider all factors before polling’
In an immediate response, state BN chief Teng Chang Yeow said that with the news of Parliament’s dissolution, months of politicking will be intensified in the next few weeks.
“Malaysians will have to consider all factors that will determine their future before polling,” he told Malaysiakini.
“The political maturity of Malaysian democracy is once again demonstrated with this 13th general election,” he added.
“Let Malaysians go to the polls with a clean and healthy (form of) campaigning.”
Meanwhile, state Umno liaison committee chief Zainal Abidin Osman said, “He (Najib) chose today (to announce the dissolution of Parliament) as it marked his fourth year in office.
“He has led this beloved nation with his various transformation plans which have all borne fruit,” he added.
Deputy Chief Minister I Mansor Othman said that Najib had finally found the courage to dissolve Parliament after months of uncertainty that the rakyat had to go through.
“We hope for a clean election that is free from lies and cheating, we hope the EC can really carry out its duties independently,” said the PKR state chief.
“At the same time, we will see 5.2 million young voters between 21-39 years voting this time around. I hope the voters can fairly evaluate the achievements of the Penang state government since 2008,” he added in a statement issued by his special assistant, Mohd Fitri Ibrahim.
PAS state commissioner Salleh Man said that the party is prepared for the election and was awaiting the dissolution of Parliament.
“Our machinery is all ready to go and during this election, we are hoping to win more seats in Penang,” he added, referring to the party’s previous win of one out of five seats in 2008.
S’gor sultan consents for assembly dissolution
In another development, Selangor Menteri Besar Abdul Khalid Ibrahim had an audience with the Selangor sultan this afternoon and obtained the latter’s consent to dissolve the state assembly tomorrow.
The 40-minute meeting took place at the Alam Shah palace in Klang, as Khalid arrived at 1.30pm and left at 2.10pm.
“After discussing about the status of the Selangor state assembly, the sultan has given the consent to have a Selangor state assembly dissolution ceremony tomorrow, April 4, 2013, at Balai Rong Seri, Istana Alam Shah Klang at 2.30pm.
“This dissolution ceremony will also be witnessed by state exco members and members of the royal council,” he said in a statement sent later.
