Note: A special memorial tribute service for Sdr Fan Yew Teng will be held at the YMCA Hall in Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday 5th January 2011 from 8pm to 11pm. Another memorial service will also be held in Ipoh at the Excelsior Hotel (14th floor) Conference Room on Thursday, 6th January 2011. All are welcomed to attend.

Belansungkawa Fan Yew Teng

Portrait of My Father, Fan Yew Teng by Pauline Fan

As I grew older, I began to understand that Papa’s work, his continuous engagement in politics and social issues, was inseparable from his life. He did not simply have a ‘job’; he lived out his uncompromising principles through his writings and actions, and was driven by his deep-seated ideals to fight for social justice and human dignity. For Papa, politics was the natural arena where citizens could exercise their rights and obligations in modern society.

Funeral Fit For a King by Dr. Chen Man Hin

You could say that  Sdr Fan Yew Teng had a funeral fit for a king. At both services, there were crowds of people. Among those present were Thais and members of the diplomatic corps representing countries of the world. And rightly so, as Fan was a champion of the poor and oppressed not only of Malaysia but also the countries of the world through his participation and links with international socialist organisations.

Fan Yew Teng The Legend by M. Kulasegaran

I shall forever remember the advice he gave me in 2004 when I was invited to speak in the New Zealand Parliament on the issue of Malaysia becoming a member of International Criminal Court of the Rome statute and had asked him to vet my paper. He threw it to me and said “Kula, when you speak in a foreign land you speak as a Malaysian MP and not like a narrow opposition MP”.

A Fighter for the Weak and Oppressed by Teresa Kok

Whenever the Muslim circles needed speakers for their Free Palestine events, they would also look for him because it was clear that Fan Yew Teng was an activist that stood for human rights and social justice. His concerns cut across all circles. He didn’t care about different religions or race. He was truly colour-blind in his conviction.

Fan Yew Teng – A Patriot and Humanist by Lim Kit Siang

As I alluded when Parliament observed one-minute’s silence as respect to Fan and condolence to the bereaved family, his wife Dr Noeleen Heyzer and his twin daughters, Malaysia has lost a patriot as Fan had fought many important battles for justice, freedom, democracy, human rights and good governance for the country and people in his life.

Farewell, Fan Yew Teng by Liew Chin Tong

I, along with the rest of Parliament, rose to our feet to observe a moment of silence for him. I asked myself what would have happened had his idealistic political dreams not been cut short prematurely by the sedition conviction. Would his political journey have changed? Would the DAP have been different had we not lost him? Could Malaysian history have been rewritten by a DAP emboldened with Fan among its ranks?
