PETALING JAYA – Teresa Kok is questioning why there were no women appointed at Tuesday’s Cabinet reshuffle. The Seputeh MP said Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak’s decision to fill six new deputy minister posts and three new senator posts with men showed showed “utter contempt for women representation in government.”
She said the reshuffle was designed to appease MCA and MIC at the expense of the public.
“Najib has chosen to appoint even more men into government leadership and further raised the male-female ratio disparity by creating two new deputy minister posts, which he again filled with men.”
Not fair
Women, who made up 50% of the electorate, have been denied their due right to proportional representation in government, she added.Citing statistics, Kok said Malaysia ranked 100 out of 134 countries in the World Economic Forum’s Gender Gap Index 2009.
“Malaysia ranks even worse at female political empowerment at number 113 out of 134 countries, behind the likes of Lesotho, Botswana and Mongolia.”
Kok was also riled up by the lack of protestation over the gender divide from Tourism Minister Dr Ng Yen Yen, who was formerly a Wanita MCA chief and Women, Family and Community Development Minister.
She also slammed the appointment of Chua Tee Yong to a deputy minister post as nepotism. Tee Yong is the son of new MCA leader Dr Chua Soi Lek.
Taking aim at Soi Lek’s son
“Tee Yong is but a first-term MP who was elected not on his own steam but by taking over the Labis constituency formerly held by his father for four terms. Thus, Tee Yong’s appointment appears to be compensation for his father’s conspicuous absence in the Cabinet and Parliament.”
The constant changing of the guard at the Ministy for Housing and Local Government, typically held by MCA, is unsettling and has resulted in a lack of follow-up on the issues and laws related to the housing industry which has adversely affected the people, she said.

Teresa,
I agree with you that there is a lack of women representative in the cabinet. It need a serious thinking in this area.
By the way, I thought Wanita MCA was made a senator and a deputy minister. Is the article above correct?
the reshuffle by Najib is not for empowerment of female, improve the efficiency and effectiveness of his administration but an attempt to achieve political appeasement and maintaining a coalition that is splitting sideways
I am only disappointed that Samy Vellu, Hee Yit Foong, Ibrahim Ali, Wee Choo Keong, Zulkifri Noordin, Bung Mokhtar are not appointed as cabinet ministers
that would cheer me up no end
New Transport Guy
This guy doesnt have any clue of his work as a minister since day one. This is the very reason our PeeeeM put him in charge of Transport so that PKFZ fiasco will died a natural death. A dumb dumb who says the wrong thing all the time . End of the day, he will dilly dally the investigation for a year and finally decide not enough evidence, case closed, as usual.
It was rather really amazing when this guy said the current investigation on PKFZ is “sufficient” when in actual fact he does not have a clue of what is PKFZ fiasco is all about. He must either grab his words from thin air and thought the rakyat is naive and stupid like him. Perhaps this is how BN/UMNO politicians work la. If OTK still have a bit of integrity, he should resign and join PKR. At least PKR will support him all the way to nail those big greedy sharks that walloped billions$$$$$$ of the rakyat hard earned money. Mind you, we are just talking PKFZ, there are much more who are much worst off.
