Latest updates on BERSIH’s rally: 11 November 2007
Total number of arrests 34 – all released by 11pm; several more injured
When the final 10 of those arrested were released by the police at approximately 11pm last night (10 November 2007), the total count of arrests during the BERSIH rally was 34.
In SUARAM’s previous update at 9pm, 10 November 2007, there was a list of 24 names of those who were released and 5 who were still held. In addition to that list, SUARAM obtained names of 5 more individuals, who were still being held at that time.

In addition to the arrests there were also individuals reported to be injured and sent to hospital. One individual, identified as Aleyasak Hamid, suffered from a broken leg and was sent to the General Hospital, Kuala Lumpur (Hospital Kuala Lumpur).

Majority of the participants are Malays and majority of the Chinese are their usual “apolitical” selves. (That’s a mild statement on the CHinese mass)
In the 20th century, much of the political rhetoric is about Malay rights needed to be protected from Chinese economic domination.
In the 21st century, the struggle seems to be Malay vs Malay as inidicated by Anwar’s Reformasi Movement as well as the fact that majority of the 10 Nov gathering are Malays.
Does this mean the recent and perpetual UMNO AGM rant about non-Malays threatening the Malays’ right are relevant?
Personally, I do not think so. Malays have the highest number of voters, control the government service, armed forces, economic regulatory bodies like Khazanah, PNB, FIC, Bank Negara etc. Not to mention Petronas, banking sector and GLCs who are monopolies in their respective field.
Malays, as the domineering race in this country, should spearhead the unity process and should not have the siege mentality as displayed most vividly in UMNO AGMs.
Malaysia’s progress owes much to the Malays.
That Malays have a siege mentality is the creation of UMNO.
They did this to create a bogeyman (the Chinese) for the Malays to target. That way, they can blame the Chinese for all their ills, especially economic ones.
Also, in order “to level” the so-called economic playing field, they created the NEP, which they high jacked for the benefit of the rich and influential.
The NEP has become so entrenched that it is now a birthright of the ruling party, for them to milk as they pleased!
