PAS candidate for KT by election, Abdul Wahid, offers a rose to a woman shopper.
This posting should be written and put on my blog two weeks ago, but I only have time to write about it while I was listening to series of speeches on the invasion of Israel to Gaza in the Dewan Rakyat now 🙂
Women will normally smile when you give them presents or flowers. This is how Abdul Wahid attract Chinese women’s attention and introduced himself to them one day after he has been announced as the Kuala Terengganu by-election candidate.
I was supposed to speak in a ceramah at Kota Baru on 3rd January 2008. I was then asked by YB Dato Wan Rahim to fly to Kuala Terengganu to campaign for the candidate, and he will drive me up to Kota Bahru after that.
I accepted his request and flew to KT that morning. I was very surprised to be greeted by the Chinese voters at Kg Cina that morning. I should say more than 90% of the people whom I met at the hawkers’ center and morning market recognised me.
I was a bit amused that I have to introduce the PAS candidate to them as some of them don’t recognise him. However, more than half of the people whom we met recognised him as he was a former exco in Terengganu.
It was quite a good walkabout in the Kg Cina on that morning. Both Wahid and I enjoyed it as the people’s response was very good.
Wahid and I held a press conference that morning market at Kg Cina. He told the press that it was the first time he has given flowers to women. He has not even given flowers to his wife, but now, wow, he’s good at it. 🙂
At lunch time, my party branch chairman, Ng Chai Heng, organised a luncheon dialogue at a Chinese restaurant. Wahid came to give a speech to the Chinese folks. He assured them not to worry about hudud Law as it’s meant for Muslims only.
I spoke for about 40 minutes on the political situation in Malaysia, and the efforts made by Pakatan Rakyat governments in various states. I told those present the impact of breaking 2/3 majority in Parliament now, as well as the significance of this by-elections in Malaysian politics.
I told the Chinese voters there that they are no more a minority group in Terengganu now, they are “Kingmaker” in this by-election, they decide which candidate to win and they decide the future of the country. I said, if they are happy with series of blunders, corruption and abuses by BN government, then they can vote for BN, if not, they should use their votes to support Pakatan Rakyat candidate to teach UMNO a lesson.
I told them that the DAP has never changed it sstand on hudud law and we have openly stated our stand on this issue and they would have read it in the papers. But as DAP, PAS & PKR are in Pakatan Rakyat alliance, all policies must be agreed by all parties before it can be tabled and implemented. I also told them that if hudud law were to be tabled in the Parliament, it can only be passed with Constitution amendment with the support of two-thirds majority, and this will never happen, because the DAP, MCA and many non-Muslim MPs from East Malaysia would not agree with it.
I then told them about series of policies that favoured the people that have been implemented in Penang, Perak and Selangor. The responses of the Chinese folks was quite pleasant.
At the end of the lunch, when the MC encouraged the people to donate for the elections campaign, including for the lunch, the donation was almost enough to pay for the cost of the lunch.
Ya, I hope Abdul Wahid wins handsomely. 🙂
Menang Menang Pakatan Rakyat.
Kuala Terengganu, Undilah calon PAS.
请投PAS. 🙂
Never I could imagine a year earlier a PAS candidate speaking on a DAP platform to an avid bunch of chinese voters and strongly supported by a female Chinese DAP stalwart.
Let’s break the racism barrier in Malaysia.
There you are LWT!
Its not just Wahid Endut winning in KT, but changing the minds of the people of KT about racial stereotying and racism. That impact will be felt all across Trengganu in the next GE.
Great to know you are doing well. I do sincerely hope Pakatan wins!!! God bless you Teresa!! 🙂
