Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who is also home minister, said today that he will negotiate for opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim to receive post-surgery treatment until he has wholly recuperated.
“I will negotiate with the Health Ministry and the Prisons Department to provide him with post-operation treatment until he is fully recovered,” he told journalists in Puchong tonight.
Zahid was asked about Anwar’s family’s request to allow the Pakatan Harapan de facto leader to undergo full recovery in a hospital instead of prison.
However, Zahid did not say whether the treatment will take place within prison.
Zahid and his wife Hamidah Khamis had earlier today visited Anwar at Kuala Lumpur Hospital after the latter underwent surgery on his right shoulder.
Although Zahid had not initially planned to visit Anwar, he said he was prompted to do so after Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak and wife Rosmah Mansor visited him yesterday.
The deputy prime minister said their visit was to show the need to set aside political differences on humanitarian grounds.
“In this situation, we should sympathise with those that have met misfortune or sickness, and in Anwar’s case, he had suffered pains in his right shoulder for a long time and it peaked during a car accident (while being transported from court to prison),” he said.
Zahid said Anwar was “big-hearted” in accepting visits from Najib and Rosmah as well as himself and his wife.
“I know that from his body language, he accepted us well,” he said.
