KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 26 — Bersih 2.0 today demanded Barisan Nasional (BN) explain and clarify reports that it had recently launched a command centre for a parliamentary seat which does not exist under the current list of electoral constituencies.
In a statement, the electoral watchdog said that it received reports and photographic evidence that BN, represented by Selangor Umno state liaison chief Tan Sri Noh Omar, had on October 23 launched the coalition’s command centre for the “P107 Sungai Buloh” parliamentary constituency.
“Bersih 2.0 is shocked because the P107 Sungai Buloh parliamentary constituency does not exist yet as it is a suggestion of new parliamentary constituencies by the Election Commission (EC) in its redelineation exercise,” it said.
Bersih accused Noh and BN of being arrogant and disrespectful of the redelineation process as the Selangor state government was still deliberating the matter in court.
“Bersih calls on the EC to impress upon BN and Tan Sri Noh Omar to do away with the launch of the command centre, to tell all political parties especially BN to respect the redelineation process, and to investigate whether there has been any declaration of new parliamentary constituencies in other areas and stop it.”
The Selangor government filed a lawsuit against the EC’s proposed redelineation exercise back on October 19 last year, which the state government has said is unconstitutional and should be declared invalid.
The lawsuit was filed against the EC, the EC chairman Datuk Seri Mohd Hashim Abdullah and EC secretary Datuk Abdul Ghani Salleh over the alleged unconstitutional redelineation exercise — which includes the renaming of constituencies and the transferring of voters through the redrawing of voting boundaries.
