KUALA LUMPUR: The son of a former inspector-general of police today lodged a police report against Malaysiakini’s founder for allegedly receiving funds from George Soros’ Open Society Foundations (OSF).
Abdul Rahman Mohd Hanif Omar, who is an ex-Royal Malaysian Air Force officer, also asked the police to investigate the portal for “activities detrimental to parliamentary democracy”.
Rahman is the son of Hanif Omar, who was the IGP from 1974 to 1994.
“While surfing the Internet, I found documents published by DCLeaks which revealed that there were Malaysians who were attempting to topple the Malaysian government.
“Among them is Malaysiakini’s founder,” he said after lodging a report at the Jalan Tun Razak police station.
Rahman also claimed that Malaysiakini’s tendency to spin news affirmed his suspicion that the portal was receiving funds from Soros.
He said if the trend carried on, the country could fall in “despair” and suffer the same fate Ukraine had.
He said the OSF documents revealed that funds were directed to an organisation in Ukraine, the International Renaissance Front (IRF) based in Kiev, which helped trigger the country’s bloody revolution.
This is why, he said, it was important for the individuals named in the document to be investigated.
On top of that, Rahman also urged the police to investigate statements made by former DAP leader Tunku Abdul Aziz, who claimed that foreign funds were distributed to the Red Bean Army (RBA), which is purportedly controlled by the DAP.
“If the authorities do not act, irresponsible individuals will topple this country and the democratically-elected government.”
In an immediate response on Malaysiakini, CEO Premesh Chandran denied Rahman’s allegations.
“I have not seen this document before, nor was I part of any discussions on ‘shared frameworks’, nor was I the chair of any committee related to OSF,” said Premesh.
