KUALA LUMPUR: Rural and Regional Development Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob’s proposal that a Malay-only version of Low Yat Plaza be opened in Kuala Lumpur is clearly a policy of racial segregation, said DAP’s Teresa Kok.
The Seputeh MP harshly condemned Ismail Sabri’s suggestion, saying that such a move showed him to be opposed to the prime minister’s concept of 1Malaysia.
“How could he have mooted such an idea which is clearly a policy of racial segregation? Where will the country be heading if such a policy is adopted?” she asked.
“Is he (then) going to set up Plaza 3 for Indians, Low Yat 4 for Ibans, Low Yat 5 for the KDMs (Kadazandusun Murut) and Low Yat 6 for the Orang Asli?”
Calling the idea “ridiculous and extreme”, Kok said that Ismail Sabri should be axed from the Cabinet for his suggestion, especially given how former deputy prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin was apparently dropped for having publicised his differences of opinion with the prime minister.
“What is to stop the prime minister from expelling Ismail Sabri who has openly and blatantly gone against his 1Malaysia concept?” she asked, also accusing him of having betrayed his oath of ministerial office to serve all Malaysians, regardless of race and religion.
This follows Ismail Sabri’s announcement at the Mara Aidilfitri Open House event yesterday that the Mara building in Jalan Raja Laut be made a venue for a Malay-only version of the telecommunications centre, prompted by the July 12 Low Yat Plaza theft incident in Bukit Bintang that turned ugly when it degenerated into a racially charged brawl.
