The Implementation of Automated Enforcement System (AES) is Nightmare to Road Users

Posted on Saturday, 15-09-2012 by Teresa Kok's Office

Media statement by Teresa Kok, Member of Parliament for Seputeh, at Kaula Lumpur on 15th September 2012.

The Road Transport Department’s plan to implement the Automated Enforcement System (AES) to tackle speeding is unreasonable and needs to be reexamined.

According to RTD, 831 AEC fixed-site 24 hours operating cameras will be installed in various “black spot” areas or high-risk roads throughout the country.  Selangor is to have 112 cameras installed, the most in any state. Of course, beside the fixed site cameras RTD also planned to install the portable AES cameras at various places as they deem fit to detect any kinds of traffic offenders.

With the implementation of the AES it has definitely shifted the duties and responsibilities or enforcement power of traffic police to the RTD.

In many developed countries various enforcement agencies  put up a huge notices and reminders wherever the speed-trap or camera are fixed. That is the way we should give clear reminder to the road users.

It is definitely improper to put a speed-trap at a hidden place to detect speeding or reckless driver let alone to increase penalty to RM300.

I agree that RTD has to enforce road codes but I urge RTD to implement a holistic plan to resolve high road accident rate as road accidents are not only due to reckless or speeding drivers but also due to road defections and lack of proper facilities or road management.

I urge Transport Minister Dato’ Seri Kong Cho Ha to review the plan to implement the AES instead of troubling the road users and force them to pay higher penalty.

Troubling the road users in general, or troubling the road users who refuse to follow the speed limit, traffic light, etc?

Don’t break the law, don’t get punished. It’s that simple.
