There can be no justifiable ground for the rush in Isa Samad’s appointment as acting chairman of SPAD and the Prime Minister must revoke the appointment

Yesterday, it was reported that the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has recorded statements from 60 witnesses in the investigation into alleged corruption and abuse of power in Felda Global Ventures Holdings Bhd (FGV).

It quoted MACC chief commissioner Dzulkifli Ahmad as saying that agency was trying to complete its investigation as soon as possible so that the investigation papers could be submitted to the Attorney-General’s Chambers for further action.

This morning former Felda Global Ventures (FGV) chairman Isa Samad and wife were summoned to be present at the MACC headquarters to have their statements recorded.

This has raised the question as to why the Prime Minister was in such a rush to appoint Isa as Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) acting chairman immediately upon his resignation as FGV chairman.

It is only logical and right that the Prime Minister should wait for the completion of the MACC’s probe. If the probe outcome proves Isa was not involved in corruption or abuse of power, then only he can be considered for the SPAD’s post.

However, given the fact that there were incessant negative news surrounding FGV and Felda when Isa was the chairman, question should again be asked if he is at all a suitable person to lead SPAD.

His appointment as acting chairman of SPAD has not gained public confidence and Najib’s decision has in fact come as a big surprise to many Malaysians. Even the former SPAD chairman Tan Sri Syed Hamid has publicly expressed his surprise.

There can be no justifiable ground for the rush in Isa Samad’s appointment as acting chairman of SPAD and the Prime Minister must revoke the appointment.
