Visitation to Genghis Khan Statue Complex

Posted on Thursday, 29-06-2017 by -ec-

Most people have learnt about Mongolia from the history subject in school. We learnt about the invasion of Xiong Nu (凶奴) into China, and of course also about the great warrior and emperor Genghis Khan who conquered many parts of the world, including Europe.

There is a Genghis Khan Statue Complex at the outskirt of the capital city of Ulaanbaatar. The Genghis Khan Equestrian Statue , part of the Complex, is a 40 metres (130 ft) tall statue of Genghis Khan on horseback. The statue is symbolically pointed east towards his birthplace. It is on top of the Genghis Khan Statue Complex, a visitor centre, itself 10 metres (33 ft) tall, with 36 columns representing the 36 khans from Genghis to Ligdan Khan. It was designed by sculptor D. Erdenebileg and architect J. Enkhjargal and erected in 2008. ( wikipedia)

On the other side of the road is a woman statute, and that is Genghis Khan’s mother. Both mother and son were looking at each other.

I find it interesting to see the way these two statues were designed and built. This somehow reflects that the Mongolian people honour their mothers.

In the Genghis Khan statue complex, there is a huge boot in the middle of the building. It is Genghis Khan’s boot.

In Mongolia, “Genghis Khan’s boot” is one of the most common souvenirs for sale in many tourist areas. It is unique. I have bought dozens of them to be given away to friends and colleagues.
