KUALA LUMPUR: The double controversies of 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) and a RM2.6 billion donation given to Prime Minister Najib Razak may prove to be Barisan Nasional’s undoing in the next general elections, said Seputeh MP Teresa Kok today.
Speaking at a convention in Malacca, Kok said Najib’s jabs at DAP in the recently concluded Umno general assembly were attempts to divert public attention from the two issues plaguing his party, and to cover up the internal crisis it was embroiled in.
“The two keys to successful crisis management are honesty and transparency. There are no other effective alternatives. Unless full and satisfactory answers are given, the 1MDB scandal will continue to be the main topic of conversation among Malaysians.
“We, the Pakatan Harapan, will definitely make it the most important issue in the next general election and it will most likely be the issue that can cause the downfall of the BN government,” she said.
Calling Najib a “very desperate” prime minister, Kok also touched on the RM2.6 billion donation, and said that while Umno assembly delegates may have said they were happy with the PM’s explanation on 1MDB, the fact remained that he had not satisfactorily answered questions about the donation such as why it was deposited into his personal bank accounts, the number of donors, how the money was used, how much was left and what happened to the rest of it.
If BN does fall, Kok said it would be replaced by Pakatan Harapan, which comprises equal partners namely PKR, Parti Amanah Negara and DAP.
“It is not and will never be a coalition dominated by DAP as alleged by Najib.
“It is clear that Umno and BN are in worse shape than last year. Our supporters must therefore, not lose heart with the 2013 general election result and must go all out in the next polls to bring about a new government in Putrajaya and create a new Malaysia for all,” she said.
