Penang Umno delegate Datuk Ahmad Darus today hit out at the government for allowing Malaysia Airlines’s (MAS) female staff to wear “unsewn” uniforms, saying that it showed a trend towards emulating the Jews.
Speaking to delegates at the Umno general assembly in PWTC, Ahmad claimed that it was Jewish culture for men to dress “decently” while the women wore revealing clothes, and pointed to their sporting attire as an example.
He questioned whether Putrajaya was “following the Jews” by allowing the national carrier’s male staff to dress modestly while its women staff wore “unsewn” clothes, in an obvious reference to the sarong kebaya worn by MAS stewardesses.
“We are not giving them the freedom to dress how they wish, but instead are giving that kind of pattern to the MAS officers. What is this? Is this a symbol of our struggle?” Ahmad said when debating religion and education.
He proposed that Wanita Umno division chiefs could help sew the female staff’s uniforms if the government had so little money.
Ahmad was apparently referring to the slits in the MAS air stewardess’ uniform when he spoke of “unsewn cloth”.
He then shared with delegates his observations of sporting attire among the “Caucasians (orang putih) and Jews”.
“I watch volleyball, what do the (Caucasian) men wear? Shorts. But what do the women wear? Just underwear. This is the way of the Caucasians, the Jews.
“Look at other sports, it’s the same… even for tennis it’s the same. The men dress decently, with their shorts sometimes up to their knees. But what do their women wear?
“Do we want MAS to emulate the Jews? I don’t understand,” Ahmad said.
Ahmad’s speech today received the immediate support of Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Departmet Datuk Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki (pic, left), who took to Facebook to voice his approval.
Asyraf, however, said that Ahmad had urged Umno to pressure MAS to stop selling alcohol and allow its air stewardesses to wear the tudung.
“His speech was in line with Umno’s struggle, which is clearly Islam-oriented as enshrined in the Federal Constitution and Umno’s constitution,” said the deputy minister in charge of religious affairs.
