DAP incumbent Teresa Kok has been the target of sexist campaign tactics before but when assailing her MCA challenger for hanging ‘sexist’ posters, the politician today said she expected more from a woman opponent. Yesterday, Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate for the Seputeh parliamentary seat, Carol Chew Chee Lin, launched a poster campaign that criticised Kok for contesting both the Seputeh seat and Kinrara state seat.One version features a caricature of Kok, clad in a skimpy red dress and matching stiletto heels, embracing ‘Mr Kinrara’ after dumping ‘Mr Seputeh’. The caption reads: “Once and for all, we will never abandon you, please vote BN.”
Another version features Kok on a rocket, flying from ‘Mr Kinrara’ to ‘Mr Seputeh’.
“The implication (of the caricature) is that I am a loose woman. This kind of message is really shocking and has sexist content. “I didn’t expect a woman to allow this kind of stupid cartoon. I am quite disappointed,” she said when contacted today. She said other DAP candidates such as secretary-general Lim Guan Eng and Prof P Ramasamy are also contesting for state and parliamentary seats but “these men” were not criticised in a similar manner. ‘Gentlewoman’s fight’ Especially given Chew’s previous position under Wanita MCA head Dr Ng Yen Yen, Kok said she expected the MCA novice to engage in a “gentlewoman’s fight.” “(Ng and her deputy Chew Mei Fun) need to take a stand on this,” she said, adding that MCA always talks about the importance of women candidates and encourages gender sensitivity. “Ng should have sent her PA (Chew) for gender sensitivity courses before sending her to contest in Seputeh,” she said. During Kok’s 1999 run for Parliament, sexist comments made by her BN opponent, Sua Chong Keh, incensed voters in the Seputah constituency and ultimately tipped the scales in Kok’s favour.
Despite numerous attempts, Chew (right) could not be reached for comment. However, China Press today quoted the BN politician as saying that the posters were not sexist and were only meant to illustrate the point that a candidate contesting for two seats would not be able to serve the people well. Conduct ethical campaigns JAG said that the billboards depicted Kok in a manner that degraded her as a woman and trivialized her work as an MP. “The sexualized cartoons of her (in a tight, bright red dress, red high heels and flitting from one “lover” to the next) sets women up as sex objects,” said the group in a statement. “Sexist comments demean women and when made in relation to their work, violate their right to a safe working environment. “This incident highlights again the need for mandatory gender sensitisation programmes for all members of political parties and Mps,” it added. JAG urged all political parties to conduct their election campaigns on a more ethical basis. |
According to the opposition politician, nearly a dozen billboards with these images have been erected in the Seputeh constituency.

Good structured plan for the Rakyat is more important than degrading of others. A wasted use of money.
I personally hope for better higher education fund, better still, free education such as those in certain countries. E.g. Finland has about 20 reputable universities with good track record of research done…best of all the university fees are funded by the government. I don’t see why we can’t do the same if we want to progress as a learned nation.
Perhaps, in a way, our country really need better education system because the lack of it, this is what you get.

As a woman, I feel disgusted by the levels that Carol Chew and the BN party would stoop to. Carol Chew – you should be ashamed of yourself! Instead of being proud and supportive of having more women representatives in the Parliament to fight for equal gender rights, women rights and protection regardless of her politics – Carol launches such a sexist campaign demeaning her own gender.
I was a BN voter last election. I am no more. Teresa – you have my support and pledge.
p/s The Sun reports that the billboards are illegal – these sexist billboards have been taken down but instead they are now other billboards depicting as Seputeh residents settling as No 2 choice.

Just a little update….here in Taman Desa, there are still at least 4 such billboards still around. 2 near Faber Towers and another 2 just in front of Taman Desa Medical Centre (beside the traffic light).
Although i’m a Malay and not a voter at Seputeh, I have live here for the past 5 years, and during those years I managed to see our sassy MP at least 5 times in different local functions. That’s truly a first for me since BN MPs or candidates will usually show their faces only during election campaign.
Keep up the good work and wishing you and other DAP candidates many landslide wins this Saturday.
BN and MCA have no more new ideas and have to resort to such “sexist” advertisements. How could the BN candidate ever “approve” the use of such advertisements? Isn’t she a woman too?
Congrats Teresa! Carol had just given you a ‘walkover’ via the naive message at the billboard. She was just a secondary school girl (ignorant about politics) when Dr. Sua’s sexist remark handed you a victory in 1999, when the chinese support for BN was the strongest in that year.
You can ignore campaiging at Seputeh now and focus your energy in winning Kinrara and helping Hannah Yeoh and Gobind Singh to capture the neighbouring constituency.

Congrats on the upcoming winning, seems like a ‘walkover’ from Carol. I believe she nail her last nail herself into the coffin with such actions (no offence to Carol, just a term). Mayb there’s no issue she can brought up (due to YB’s excellent record) and her ‘smart’ campaign team can only thought of such degarding promotions. At least they are trying their best but backfired. What angers me is she doesnt deem it as something wrong, her boss (NYY) didnt say anything, her boss’s boss (OKT) also didnt say anything…Guess they thought is no use fanning a fire they set up themselves.
