Two days ago, I met this ten-year-old girl who suffers from scoliosis. Scoliosis is a medical condition which means that her spine is deformed and is twisted in an S-shape instead of being upright. This girl is in pain because her spine presses on her internal organs. Even though she is already ten years old, she weighs less than 20kg and her height is just 128cm.
Her mother, Mdm Siew Pek Wah, has been trying to get the necessary medical treatment for her for years but nothing has worked so far.
Finally, UKM Medical Center is willing to perform an operation that will help correct her spine. They have managed to get 3 surgeons from abroad to perform the surgery. The operation will cost RM90,000, which the family can’t afford.
Thus, Mdm Siew approached me in the hope of obtaining financial assistance from members of the public. I wrote a cheque for her. Your generous contribution would also be much appreciated.
Mdm Siew Pek Wah can be reached on her mobile phone at 0173302686 if more info is required. Her bank account details are MBB 514114770866.
Hi,
Couple of things.
1. Why is UKM as a public hospital charging that much for scoliosis surgery?
2. Cost even in private centres in Malaysia is LESS than RM90K.
You may enquire with Madam Siew for the breakdown of UKM’s quotation.
Hi again,
I thought as a schoolgoing kid, she is entitled to ‘free’ medical care?
UKM, at most can only charge for cost of implants not the doctors’ fee unless it’s done in their private wing..which begs the question why do it in their private wing?
Even in private sector it’s done as part of CSR in needy folks…
