Press statement on Tiong King Sing and his threats of legal action (26 Sept 09)
Tiong’s threat to sue Transparency International an act of desperation to intimidate non-partisan corruption watchdog
I read with amusement that BN Backbenchers Club chief and Bintulu MP Tiong King Sing had threatened legal action against Transparency International for releasing their annual report “Global Corruption Report 2009: Corruption and the Private Sector.”
You can download the report from here http://www.transparency.org/content/download/46258/740828 , and refer to pages 274 – 275 for the section on Malaysia.
I wonder what it is about the report that unnerved Tiong so much that he had to use his millions to try to cow a corruption watchdog into submission. (I know he can afford it. After all, he’s the man who by his own admission donated RM10 million to MCA divisions upon Ong Tee Keat’s request.)
Was it the statement that declared Port Klang Free Zone (PKFZ) to be the biggest scandal of the year, causing a loss to taxpayers of at least RM4.6 billion?
Was it the statement that Kuala Dimensi Sdn Bhd, of which Tiong is the CEO, had sold the land for PKFZ to Port Klang Authority in 2002 for RM1.8 billion, after having purchased it for a mere RM95 million just three years earlier from Pulau Lumut Development Cooperative Bhd (PLDCB)?
Was it the statement that identified Kuala Dimensi as the private company that was subsequently given the contract to develop the PKFZ?
Or was it the statement that the costs of development had risen from an estimated RM1.1 billion (US$315 million) to RM4.7 billion, and that these increased costs did not have the necessary approval from government agencies?
It’s hardly surprising then that the PKFZ was run by a network of individuals, which included UMNO politicians, officials from the Ministry of Transport, Port Klang Authority (PKA) officials and Tiong’s own Kuala Dimensi Sdn Bhd. All have used PKFZ to milk taxpayers dry for their own personal gain.
Tiong can press on with his threats of legal action against the critics of Kuala Dimensi’s malpractices all he wants but the only thing he’ll succeed in doing is to sear into the minds of the public that he and Kuala Dimensi was a major beneficiary of the biggest corruption scandal ever to rock Malaysia.
I commend Paul Low and his team at Transparency International for continuously monitoring corruption in Malaysia, including that of the PKFZ scandal.
Unfortunately, I can’t say the same for Prime Minister Najib who has been an absolute disgrace in how he has been dragging his feet in the handling the PKFZ scandal. The “super task force” which he belatedly set up, and appointed Chief Secretary Sidek Hassan to head, is nothing but a smokescreen to conceal the blatant corruption which has occurred under Barisan Nasional’s administration.
Until the Prime Minister agrees have a Royal Commission of Inquiry on this matter, the public will continue to have no faith that the perpetrators of this corruption scandal will ever be brought to justice.
PKFZ scandal is only an example of mega malpractices by BNajis. There are many more mega public project scandals not exposed to the public. Malaysians are bearing the cost of these projects running into billions after bond issued. Although these projects said privatised but the truth is debts are bear by the government.
Under privatised express railway KLIA-KL Sentral, debts own by government and YTL operator for railway. How much billions poured into mega logistic hub in Senai to compete with Singapore? These projects are failure when under utilised and become not economical viable. The next super-mega scandal will be Sarawak’s hydro-dam energy corridor; Bakun dam not completed since 1990s but RM12 billion cabel linking to Semenanjung already under way.

Tiong must have learnt this business of suing in order to shut out his opponent’s voice to tell the truth !
Surely you do remember Anwar’s and the many litigations Anwar have initiated ! He would be out of politics when these suits come to court and in jail by the time these suits are heard in court.
Ever watch a dog after securing the bone threaten to bite anyone who dare to get near?
the thing is….the dog is furious about his hard fought bone that is about to be snatched away; and, therefore will make every effort to ensure that he hold on to the bone!
the dog is friendly just before he got the bone but as soon as he got it, his attitude made a 360 degree turn. he may even bite the owner and the hand that feed him all these years.
human is no different!
