Party vice-chairman Teresa Kok says RoS also invited to sent representatives to party convention on Sept 10 to observe re-election process, but no reply has been forthcoming.
KUALA LUMPUR: DAP vice-chairman Teresa Kok said the party may have to postpone it’s party re-election if the Registrar of Societies (RoS) fails to send a letter of confirmation on time.
“We’re very eager to have our party elections but have to wait for the letter from RoS. Else, we will have to postpone,” she said during a press conference at the DAP headquarters today.
DAP had proposed to hold the re-election of its central executive committee (CEC) on Sept 10.
Kok had said the party wanted to hold the re-election as soon as possible but that would depend on the approval by RoS.
The Seputeh MP also said today the party has invited RoS to send representatives to the party convention.
“We told them we are eager to cooperate (with them). They said they will let us know.
“They couldn’t confirm whether we can have it on Sept 10 ,” she added.
She also hoped RoS would not be asking DAP to hold re-election each time there was a complaint.
Kok had a meeting with RoS director-general Mohammad Razin Abdullah on Aug 21 at the RoS headquarters in Putrajaya.
The RoS, in a statement on July 7, said it had no intention of de-registering DAP but told the party to hold a fresh CEC election.
Razin had said some DAP members were unhappy with the re-election process held on Sept 29, 2013.
He had said that based on the complaints, the RoS believes that the re-election of DAP’s CEC members and main office bearers during that period was not legal.
He said that the re-election should have been carried out based on a list of delegates who were authorised to attend and vote in the internal polls held on Dec 15, 2012.
Yesterday, Kok told FMT that RoS needs to confirm the details of the party’s delegates list as well as the records of two DAP branches.
The issue of DAP having to hold fresh Central Executive Committee (CEC) elections arose on July 7 when the RoS released a media statement saying that the appointment of CEC members and those who held key positions in DAP via its re-election on Sep 29, 2013 was deemed unlawful.
“The re-election should be based on the list of delegates entitled to attend and vote in the CEC election on Dec 15, 2012 which involved 2,576 delegates from 865 branches.
“This is because only valid and recognised CEC members can appoint individuals to the main positions, in accordance with the Societies Act 1966 and DAP’s constitution,” Mohammad Razin said in the statement.
RoS finally followed up with an official letter to the party on July 18 repeating its instructions from the statement, and giving its reasons.
DAP has since agreed to hold fresh party polls, but under protest.
