Today I went to Jalan Duta court to support Anwar Ibrahim’s application to challenge the controversial National Security Council Act 2016 (NSC Act).
I witnessed the “hand-shake of the century” where Anwar Ibrahim shook Tun Mahathir’s hand after he came into the court room. It happened at the time when the judge was not around, so all the journalists and supporters were busy taking photos at that precious moment.
The photo went viral soon after that and many friends and supporters commented about it. Many said “there is no permanent enemy in politics”, some expressed doubts and cynicism about the reconciliation, some rejoiced on this special moment, some expressed anger and distrust on both Mahathir and Anwar Ibrahim.
I know very well the feelings of Anwar’s families and close-aides who have suffered so much after Anwar’s sacking from UMNO and the cabinet. It is really not easy for Anwar to shake Mahathir’s hands, the same goes for Mahathir.
Malaysiakini reported that Mahathir said he did not come to make peace with Anwar but he came to support Anwar’s move to challenge NSC Act. Such remarks from Mahathir shows that it is hard for him to reconcile with Anwar Ibrahim too.
Reconciliation can be a difficult process. Today was the necessary first step.
Their meeting shows that they are real leaders who know when to place the bigger agenda before personal feelings.
