I am very happy to see the churches and Buddhist temple open up their premises for the Bersih participants. This is love and kindness of religion.
I told a foreign diplomat that if Jesus is living in Malaysia, I believe he will walk with the crowd and criticize against corruption, and preach about the Heavenly Kingdom’s principle in managing the state and the people.
Well done, Bishop Julian Leow. May God be with you.
KUALA LUMPUR: Catholic churches had more than open doors, buns and a hearty welcome for Bersih supporters, they had the Archbishop of Kuala Lumpur himself riding the LRT train clad in Bersih yellow to attend the rally.
Bishop Julian Leow became a Facebook star after rally-goers spotted him in an LRT coach and circulated photographs.
St John’s Cathedral in Bukit Nanas was one of three Catholic churches which opened their doors for Bersih rally-goers to seek shelter during the weekend.
Many gathered at Our Lady of Fatima church in Brickfields to wait for friends before joining the march to Dataran Merdeka.
At St John’s, there were buns and mineral water for the taking, donated by many non-Christian groups. A church worker said the storeroom was full of donated food, including cherries and oranges.
Buddhist volunteers from Ti Ratana Penchala Community Centre brought a food truck to St John’s compound to distribute the buns and water, and had given out a third of their stock by late afternoon, Malaysian Insider reported.
The two volunteers, Boh Chee Meng and Tan Swee Keong, said they brought 1,000 buns and 1,000 bottles of mineral water to support the church’s efforts.
St Anthony’s Church in Pudu also had ample food, but the location of the church, away from the rally destination of Dataran Merdeka, meant fewer stopped by.
The three churches remain open to rally-goers until the rally ends tomorrow night.
