I went in Salak South yesterday to see that the drains on Jalan Besar, Salak South finally get cleaned and unclogged by Alam Flora after so many complaints by local residents, businesses and myself. I also took the opportunity to take DBKL officers to the site of a development nearby which has caused inconvenience to the residents.

Salak South town drains finally get a clean-up
By BAVANI M
IT WILL take two days with 20 workers from Alam Flora, a high pressure-jetter and a vac-all machine to clean up the drains fronting the main road of Salak South town.
Alam Flora operations and resources planning manager Raja Amir Hamzah Raja Hassan said the drainage fronting the shops was clogged with oil sludge from the restaurants and it was the main reason why the drains in the area were all choked up.
“The restaurateurs are the main culprits here and they have to install grease traps to limit the outflow of oil into the drains and clogging the drainage system and polluting the rivers,” Raja Amir said, adding that it was the main contributing factor to the drainage getting clogged and water overflowing.
Washing it out: Alam Flora workers cleaning the drains in Salak South town.
According to him, since Salak South town is in a low-lying area; when it rains everything washes into the drains, including debris.“The restaurant operators must practise sustainable waste management and take responsibility in keeping their area clean. It is a joint responsibility and not just something that should be left to Alam Flora alone,” he said.
Raja Amir said when his team visited the area after receiving complaints from Seputeh MP Teresa Kok recently, he was surprised that most of the shops did not even have a proper garbage bin.
“They just throw their rubbish in plastic bags all over the place and this makes it difficult for our people to collect the rubbish and it is also time consuming,” Raja Amir said.
Meanwhile, Kok who was present at the clean-up session yesterday said she was pleased with Alam Flora for responding to her complaint.
Kok also brought up another matter with Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) officers with regards to a proposed development in the area.
“The owner of the project had fenced up the area and levelled up the land surrounding the area.
“I believe debris from the project is also washing into the drains here and clogging up the drainage system,” she said, adding that she hoped DBKL could do something to address the problem soon.
Malaysians generally are disgusting bunch, they love littering and state by their own actions that throwing rubbish everywhere, spitting onto the roads and damaging public goods are patriotic acts.
