KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 18 — Tenaga Nasional Bhd’s (TNB) insistence on maintenance works that will leave millions without water in the week before Christmas was dumbfounding, said Seputeh MP Teresa Kok.
The decision to time the remedial works to coincide with a festive season also showed a complete disregard for the hardship that will befall consumers preparing to celebrate their festivities, Kok added.
Kok further criticised TNB for ignoring pleas for it to delay the repair of the main entry substation in Bukit Badong, Hulu Selangor to after Christmas.
“Why is TNB so reluctant to postpone the scheduled maintenance when it is so clear that the water disruption that will result is going to heavily affect the people?” she said in a statement.
“Who will ever believe that the maintenance work must be carried out on the exact dates planned and that there can be no change in the dates?”
She also challenged TNB’s rationale that it selected the dates as they were those with the lowest water consumption, saying this failed to take into account the disruptions it would cause to festivities.
“A considerate decision maker would not have proposed any planned maintenance work that will cause massive water disruption during any pre festive or festive season, whether it is Christmas, Hari Raya Adil Fitiri , Deepavali or Chinese New Year.”
TNB will begin repairs to the substation tomorrow, which will lower the capacities at three Sungai Selangor water treatment plants.
Syabas in turn will conduct zonal water rationing that will leave nearly four million consumers in the Klang Valley without water at various times next week including on Christmas eve.
Separately, a Syabas spokesman today said the announced schedule was to allow water supply to be fully restored as soon as possible.
