KUALA LUMPUR: A full investigation will be conducted into how the mob who attacked Shah Alam MP Khalid Samad this morning outside the main Parliament building had entered the compound in the first place, says Deputy Home Minister Nur Jazlan Mohamed.
Nur Jazlan said that visitors to Parliament had to be invited in by government servants or the MPs themselves.
“Someone must take responsibility for visitors coming into a restricted area of Parliament.
“We don’t know if they had actually registered themselves at the gate. We’re going to direct the government security office unit to investigate the matter,” Nur Jazlan said.
This follows the sudden storm sparked in the Dewan Rakyat on Monday after Pasir Salak MP Tajuddin Abdul Rahman had remarked that Seputeh MP Teresa Kok “is the only woman with a ‘Kok’.”
The remark threw the House into an uproar, with the opposition demanding that Tajuddin retract his statement.
Amanah MP Khalid Samad, in defending Kok, had called Tajuddin “menteri sial” (cursed minister) and this had Tajuddin replying “kurang ajar” (rude).
The group of about 20-30 men that harrassed Khalid were shouting “Hidup Pasir Salak! Hidup Pasir Salak!” (Long live Pasir Salak), referring to Tajuddin’s Pasir Salak constituency.
One of the men had also shouted at Khalid, saying “ini baru permulaan” (this is just the beginning).
Nur Jazlan questioned why security had allowed the Pasir Salak mob inside from the start, noting Khalid’s claim that security had warned him of their presence.
“They should have taken immediate and preventive action to not let these people inside the compound, or event come close to the actual Parliament chamber.
“I would like to remind people that Parliament is a secure area, that’s why the issue will be investigated thoroughly. Serious action will be taken against those who violated Parliament’s security,” Nur Jazlan said.
When questioned if the attackers could be investigated for terrorism or for attacking parliamentary democracy, Nur Jazlan only said to wait until investigations were concluded.
