KUALA LUMPUR, June 25 — Coming to DAP’s defence after a Pahang cleric labelled the party “kafir harbi” for opposing hudud, a PKR leader today urged the police to take necessary measures to ensure the comment does not spark violence here.
The leader, central committee member Latheefa Koya said the comment by Pahang Mufti Datuk Seri Dr Abdul Rahman Osman was a dangerous one as the term “kafir harbi” is specifically used on non-Muslims who wage war against their fellow faith followers.
She said in a statement that it is in this context that the “kafir harbi” can be fought against and even slain.
“It is thus an irresponsible and dangerous statement,” Latheefa said.
“While I strongly support freedom of speech, incitement to violence of any kind, implied or express, cannot be tolerated.
“The police must take immediate steps to investigate and take the necessary action in the interest of public peace and safety,” she added.
Latheefa also said Abdul Rahman was wrong to use such a label on the DAP as it was un-Islamic to suggest that the entire party and its supporters should be fought against in a violent way.
She said it was also wrong to suggest that those in opposition of PAS’s Shariah Bill and its version of hudud were against Islam.
“Islam is a religion of peace, and to call for bloodshed against people, regardless of their faith, is against the very essence of Islam.
“This outrageous pronouncement by the Pahang Mufti borders on criminal incitement to violence, and can have serious and drastic consequences,” she said.
Yesterday, Abdul Rahman was quoted as labelling the DAP “kafir harbi” over its opposition to hudud laws, adding as well that it would be a “great sin” for Muslims to support the party.
It is believed that those categorised as “kafir harbi” can be killed for being against the implementation of Islamic principles and going against God.
This was not the first time the Pahang mufti has openly attacked the DAP. He previously refused to apologise to the opposition party over the state religious department’s Aidiladha sermon last September that claimed it was against Islam to join the DAP.
PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang tabled a private member’s Bill in Parliament last month to amend the Shariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act 1965 to allow Islamic courts to impose harsher sentences, except for the death penalty, as Shariah court punishments are currently restricted to jail terms not exceeding three years, or whipping of not more than six strokes, or fines of not more than RM5,000.
PAS and Umno have denied that the Bill is an attempt to implement hudud in Malaysia but those opposing the Bill, including the DAP and several BN component parties, have disagreed.
