Hi friends, have you heard of INPENS? I am here to introduce to you a vocational training institute set up by the Selangor State Government. Inpens stands for “Industri Pendidikan Negeri Selangor”. The history of INPENS can be found at its website.
However, the website has not been updated for a long time. This vocational training college is no more at Pulau Indah, the director of INPENS Dato’ Dr Mydin had, in April shifted it to Kuala Selangor, to a nice college building that was previously ‘abandoned’ for many years.
The delegation having a dialogue with the director of INPENS Dato’ Mydin
INPENS is not under my portfolio. The reason I visit INPENS on 17th Oct together with a volunteer group of business people who assist me to get investors to Selangor, was because we are looking into how to upgrade the quality of the work force in Selangor, because one of the main complaints of foreign investors in Selangor is we don’t have a ‘quality’ work force.
It took us about one hour to drive to Kuala Selangor to visit INPENS, but it was a worthwhile trip. The director Dato’ Mydin said running this skills training college gives him great satisfaction, becauses he is able to see many poor students being trained as skilled workers. This is something money can’t buy.
Dato’ Mydin plans to increase the intake of students from the present 500 to 1,000. The delegation members gave him various suggestions on how to get the certificates of his college recognised by various industries. We are looking at how the business community and INPENS can work together closely to train the youth in Selangor.
Here are some photos taken during that visit.
The female students here are learning bridal make-up.
Students learning facial treatment
Learning how to design software and maintain computers.
This is a model car engine at the car repair workshop
Students here learning about air-conditioner repair
They are learning how to fix up wires and switches
The students normally don’t read the newspapers. So the college staffs put up newspapers cuttings on notice boards near the canteen for them to glance through
This is a female students hostel room. See, so many of them sharing one big room.
I believe watching TV is their only entertainment at night as Kuala Selangor is not exactly a fun centre.

Dear YB,
I have not heard of this organisation before.
From the short brief above, i assume that it is run like the Monfort Boys Home format.
How about providing the address?

Good trip YB,
By looking at the pix, the utilities does not speak International College.
How can the state government overcome this problem. Need to have more multiracial participation and not only BUMI, which can enhance unity spirit.
Yes, it is important to have a vocational institute to develop skills of workers. At the moment, we seem to have more graduates from universities with design capabilities than skilled technicians who can fabricate designs into hardware.
This will put us towards the par of Japan & UK etc.
I thank the Selangor State Government & Dato’ Mydin especially for their vision towards upgrading our skills at the middle & lower levels.

We need more vocational training institutes than universities. Malaysia produces oil and can be a fabrication centre for oil rigs, platforms and even shipbuilding. Just look at Korea and Singapore that has heavy industries.
Also why don’t we sell prefab buildings to Singapore when they need to build more houses but they do not have the natural resources.
The Government needs to encourage private sector to act.
This is something i don’t think many ever knew about! Thanks YB for enlightening us! It be great if you could share more information about this facility..
Your right the website doesn’t say much and it be great option for lots of our children.
Happy Deepavali to All!!
“INPENS” is the acronym for INDUSTRI PENDIDIKAN NEGERI SELANGOR. It was originally under the administration of Yayasan Selangor before being placed under Shah Alam Property Holdings Berhad. Inpens College is the catalyst for the Universiti Industri Selangor (UNISEL). During the period of 1994 to 1997, Inpens was rated as one of the top colleges in Selangor, competing with institutions like INTI, Taylors, etc. However, with the change of State Administration from Tan Sri Muhammad Taib to Tan Sri Abu Hassan, the college’s focus changed from a multi-racial composition, both the management and students. Further, for other reasons best not to be indulged, the college was moved from Kelana Jaya. It offered various courses from Certificate to twinning degree programmes. The reason I know of this is because I worked there as the Director of Corporate Services.
I have, since then monitored its progression. The institution had a potential to be a world class institution had it followed our blueprint. In 1995/96, we the first to negotiate an Interactive Distance learning project covering all districts within Selangor, employing foreign lecturers and administrators on contractual basis to upgrade the quality of teaching and administration. We had the support of Digital Equipment Malaysia who sponsored our visit to its plant in Los Angeles, America and Canada to study the concept of self sufficient University City.
Well, I hope the best

Hi there!
DAP or PR should start something rolling in Selangor,Penang,Perak-there are a lot of youths who can benefit-in view of the financial turmoil, I think many will appreciate skills training and financial assistance to enable them greater flexibility and marketability if or when they are faced with retrenchments or at crossroads of their life.
Also, short courses like skills enchancement or plain accumulating knowledge are popular if marketed cheaply and properly.
I know, because I do marketing for a local college and we had to turn away many because of the lack of funds and many also want short courses to upgrade their skills and re-enter the job market with new ideas.
It will be like Lifelong learning revisited—only BETTER!
Start the ball rolling!
PS-Let me know if I can help in any minute way : )
