In a 2013 parliamentary reply, it was revealed that there were four BN politicians appointed to advisory positions in the Prime Minister’s Department:
Rais Yatim as special advisor on social and cultural issues, with RM27, 227.20 monthly allowance;
Johari Baharum, as special advisor to the Northern Corridor Economic Region, with RM21,500 allowance;
Abdullah Mohd Zin, as advisor on religion issues, with RM25,106 monthly allowance;
Shahrizat Abdul Jalil, as advisor to women development and entrepreneurship, with RM27,227.20 monthly allowance.
The appointments, especially those which duplicate the roles of Ministers, have been criticized as unnecessary and a waste of public funds.
Yet the Prime Minister Dato Seri Njaib has appointed another BN politician as special adviser .
Wanita MCA chief Heng Seai Kie told the Oriental Daily two days ago that she was appointed as special adviser for the implementation of the National Unity Blueprint and she will report to the Prime Minister directly.
Heng said she and the Unity Minister Jospeh Kurup will focus on their respective territories.
“As Joseph Kurup is an East Malaysian leader, he understands East Malaysia better while I will handle national unity issues in West Malaysia, so as to effectively implement various national unity programmes,” she said.
It is totally baffling how the Prime Minister could make such an appointment which is most unnecessary, unjustifiable and a waste of public funds.
Heng’s explanation that she is needed to deal with unity issues in West Malaysia is totally unconvincing as if this is the case, does it mean that all Ministers from the East Malaysia should have special advisers to assist them?
A Minister is assisted by civil servants and if Joseph Kurup is still unable to handle the unity issues in West Malaysia, he should be relieved of his Cabinet post.
And even if someone has to be specially tasked to help implement the unity blueprint, can’t the person be the department’s director general?
It is obvious that Heng’s appointment is merely another move by Najib to appoint BN politicians via back door to government posts.
Given Heng’s move to racialise the GST issue in the run up to the recent Rompin by election, she is certainly the most unsuitable and unqualified person to implement the national unity blueprint.
May 1 Chinapress and May 2 Malaysiakini have reported that Heng has told Chinese in the country not to oppose the Goods and Services Tax (GST) as the system will see the Malays paying more.
Despite her denial, her recorded interview with the Chinapress was available in the social media.
Not only did she take a racial approach to the GST issue, she also lacked the courage to admit and apologise for her mistake despite having met massive criticisms.
Yet the Prime Minister can think that she is fit to implement the unity blueprint!
The Prime Minister has certainly made himself a laughing stock by appointing Heng to handle unity issues.
I have no doubt that if the full transcript of Heng’s recorded interview with Chinapress is presented in the Cabinet, most Ministers will be shocked at her racial approach of the GST issue and her appointment by the Prime Minister.
