On April 22, DAP FT Vice Chairperson and MP for Seputeh, Teresa Kok, lost her suit on her 2008 ISA detention against the police and the Malaysian government. She was also ordered to pay RM 50,000 to the Malaysian government by the High Court.
Teresa Kok was detained under the ISA in September 2008 based on rumors and false allegations that she had led residents to oppose against azan call of the mosque at Bandar Kinrara 5, Puchong. She was released 7 days by the police and Malaysian government later after they found out that she was not involved in the opposition against azan of that particular mosque at all.
She filed the suit in 2009 and the High Court made its decision on April 22, this year.
DAP FT, like many Malaysians, are deeply disappointed by the High Court’s decision as her ISA detention was clearly an arbitrary act. The cost of RM 50,000 awarded against her was also manifestly excessive and unjust.
We are however most encouraged by many Malaysians who have expressed their support, solidarity and sympathy for her. Many have expressed their willingness to share her burden of paying the RM 50,000 costs to the government .
DAP FT therefore today launches a “RM1 Per Person for Teresa Kok” fundraising campaign to help her to pay the RM50, 000 cost to the government. We also express our full support for her to appeal against the High Court’s decision.
All Malaysians who wish to support Teresa Kok to pay cost to the government can channel their donation to “Pusat Khidmat Seputeh” at AmBank account no: 2472-0120-0499-8.
