KUALA LUMPUR, April 3 ― DAP’s Teresa Kok today urged Putrajaya to explain why the April rate for the RON97 petrol remained the same after the Goods and Services Tax (GST), claiming that prices should drop under the new consumption tax system.
Explaining, Kok pointed out that according to a Bernama report in 2012, then Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, when explaining the government’s calculations for pump prices, had revealed that the RON97 petrol grade is imposed a sales tax of 58 sen per litre.
With the GST, however, the same sales tax is no longer imposed on the fuel, the lawmaker pointed out.
“Since the GST amount is lower than 58 sen per litre, then the new RON97 should therefore be cheaper. Why is it then that the April price for RON97 remains unchanged?
“Is the government saying that it has abolished the sales tax of RM0.58 sen per litre, and the GST amount imposed is also 58 sen per litre? If this is the case, show the public your calculation,” she said in a statement.
Two days ago, Bernama reported that a Finance Ministry official confirmed that the price of RON97 petrol for April remains unchanged from March at RM2.25 per litre, even with the 6 per cent GST in place.
Kok, who is also the Seputeh MP, asked if there are other factors which resulted in the unchanged price.
“And if so, what were they and why was RON95 price not affected at all?
“Deputy Finance Minister Datuk Ahmad Maslan and Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Datuk Seri Hasan Malek must explain to the public why RON97 is not priced lower than the present price of RM 2.25 per litre,” she said.
