NST Article 16 Feb 2012:
RESIDENTS of Taman Tasik Prima, Puchong, want the Education Ministry to approve the building of three schools on a plot of land in their area.
The residents are urging the ministry to allow the construction of SJK(C) Yak Chee, SMJK Catholic and a school for autistic children on a 5.2ha plot of land that has already been gazetted by the Selangor government for schools.
About 50 Taman Tasik Prima Puchong residents held a peaceful demonstration at the site recently.
Taman Tasik Prima resident Chin Yin Fong, 36, said: “We shouldn’t be made to worry about our children’s future.
“What we need here are more Chinese schools. With more people moving into the area, there will be demand for Chinese schools,” she said.
Chin said it was not easy to enrol their children in Chinese schools as there were limited places .
“Last year we managed to get a place for our daughter at a Chinese school.
“What about in a few years’ time when my other two children go to school? What happens then?” she asked.
The state government had applied to the Education Ministry last year to allow the construction of the three schools but it was rejected.
The state government, represented by its deputy secretary for development Datuk Noordin Sulaiman, said complaints had been received from residents over the shortage of Chinese schools in Petaling district.
The state exco said there had been a significant increase in the number of Chinese school students in the Petaling district. In 1998, there were 24,518 students in Chinese schools and last year the figure rose to 43,611 students, an increase of 77 per cent over a 13 year period.
Responding to the letter, Education Ministry secretary-general Datuk Dr Rosli Mohamed said the gazetted land was reserved for SK Taman Tasik Prima Puchong and SMK Taman Tasik Prima Puchong and hence their application for the Chinese schools was rejected.
Selangor state senior executive councillor and chairman of the Investment, Industry and Trade Committee Teresa Kok said the land had been gazetted as a school reserve and the state government had a say on school allocations.
Puchong member of parliament Gobind Singh Deo said it was up to the Education Ministry to decide.
“We have sent all the letters to the various authorities. It is up to the Federal Government to approve the schools. We hope everyone can put aside their political differences and solve the problem,” he said.
Gobind said he would raise the issue at the parliamentary session next month.
I’d like to know is there any written confirmation from state gov to approve the land to Yak Chee, Catholic and autistic schools? if none, why?
Yes there is. Please refer to this post: http://teresakok.com/2012/02/06/why-is-mcas-wee-afraid-to-meet-dong-jiao-zong-over-school-land-allocated-by-sgor-govt/ where the said written documentation of the state approval can be found.
Thank you YB for taking time answering my question. it seems now the ball is at the Education Ministry. So the community that requires such schools should rise up and put pressure to EM to proceed with approval.
however, i hope the lands would be gazetted for intended parties and purposes to avoid abuse. I hope to see the positive result on these matters. Thank you and god bless.
