Today, hawkers from Happy Garden expressed their thanks to me for using my own funds to repair a road – Jalan Selesa – servicing their area. I conducted a press conference at the area this morning and as you can see from the photo below, the hawkers were very relieved to see the issue being addressed. This matter of paying for the repairs, even though technically the role and responsibility of DBKL, was something I have taken on to do beyond the scope of my service centre.
The thing is, a lot of roads in Seputeh are in very bad condition and I consistently received a lot of complaints from residents and business owners in the area. I have raised this issue in Parliament many times before and have written/ spoken to DBKL numerous times. However, repairs are hardly made as there is a lack of attention from DBKL on this matter in this area.
Finally, after being fed-up of waiting for DBKL and because of the needs of my Seputeh constituents, I hired a contractor 2 days ago told to fill up the potholes on Jalan Selasa (Happy Garden). The contractor used up a total of 2 tonnes of tar – which cost more than RM1000/-. I paid for this with my own money. Unfortunately, we still could not fill up all the potholes as there a lot more areas to cover there. During the PC, more hawkers pointed out further areas of the road which need attention. Therefore, I have commissioned the contractor to repair the roads with a further 3 tonnes of tar. The extra cost of which I will pay for.
Even though I am not given government allocation for this and as well it may be deemed a breach of procedure since I have initiated this repairs, instead of DBKL, the residents and traders in this area cannot wait any longer. I am very upset with the inaction of DBKL which is forcing a wakil rakyat to use personal funds, and i am doing this act as a kind of protest to highlight to DBKL that their negligence and irresponsibility is unbecoming of a public service body. Furthermore, I am being blamed by my constituents for the problems and the lack of action by DBKL even though I have done all I can. So I have to act and get this private contractor to do the job using my own funds.
DBKL is shirking its responsibility especially even after residents and traders in the area pay fees to the body. I hope the residents in this area can understand the situation and address their grievance to DBKL more vociferously.
I hope that you can work as effectively for Taman Desa, Old Klang Road, KL to have the massive open sewage works opposite this housing estate, either removed or covered up, so that the stench would not be noticeable.
Can that be done?
Please let me have your comments.
Thank you.
Regards,
Winston
