Press statement by Teresa Kok, DAP Candidate for Seputeh Parliamentary seat on 25th February 2008, Kuala Lumpur
The demand of DBKL to take down my elections publicity materials that hung at the flyover of Kuchai Lama is unfair and unjust
I am very unhappy with the request of DBKL to take down my elections publicity materials from the flyover of Jalan Kuchai Lama traffic light junction yesterday.
My party members have hung up the Rocket flags and buntings immediately after the nomination yesterday. One hour later, my election agent and I received calls from DBKL officers that asked us to take down the publicity materials.
My members and I were very reluctant to do so, because we think that we have not violated elections laws. The reason DBKL asked me to take down the DAP flags and banners was because the Datuk Bandar and my BN opponent in Seputeh constituency want to officiate the opening of the flyover. They wanted to tell the Seputeh constituents that this is another project of Barisan Nasional.
Last night, DBKL officers have taken down publicity materials and flags from that flyover. They told us that we can hang them up again after the opening this afternoon. If those publicity materials are from the Barisan Nasional candidate, will DBKL ask them to take down? Why didn’t DBKL choose to invite my opponent Carol Chew and not me while both of us are the candidates of Seputeh Parliamentary seat in this general election?
Yesterday, immediately after nomination, I called for a press conference at the newly built flyover at Jalan Kuchai Lama. I mentioned how ridiculous it was that the flyover has been completed by DBKL for more than a month, but DBKL refused to open it for the public. DBKL mentioned they have to wait for Datuk Bandar and the BN big shots to officiate the flyover before it can be opened to the public. What angered me more was I learnt that the Datuk Bandar and the BN candidates will officiate the flyover today, 25th Feb 2008 at 3pm but the invitation was not extended to me even though i have assisted DBKL plus it is so near my office.
The construction of the flyover has already caused lots of inconveniences to the public, by not opening the flyover even after completion of the project has angered the public even more. It has caused serious traffic jams in the surrounding areas especially prior to Chinese New Year period. Many people are cursing the DBKL authority for not opening the flyover long after it was completed.
DBKL has been very ungrateful on this matter. In year 2006, when I learnt that the delay of the construction of the flyover was caused by UMNO Seputeh who squatted at state land refused to move out from the Jalan Kuchai Lama road side, I brought my members to stage a demonstration outside UMNO Seputeh premises in February 2006. The UMNO members almost fought with my members during the confrontation. This incident was highlighted in the media. Later UMNO Seputeh was moved out from the site and only then the construction of the flyover was able to be continued.
DBKL has never taken any action towards UMNO Seputeh at that time. If that “squatter” was not belonged to UMNO Seputeh but belonged to ordinary folks or the DAP, the premises would have gone long ago. What a double standard practised by DBKL!! I have helped DBKL to remove the UMNO Seputeh squatter, how come they never thanked me?
Teresa Kok
Disgusting. I hope the BN lose heavily in Seputeh. The people are not stupid!!
so sad to hear about it…
but never give up k!!
fight till the end!!
god will bless you~~
must win o!!
^_^
the dudes from BN only know how to hard sell themselves
e.g. Dr Kow’s annoying face at every lamp post at my place, misleading TV & Newspaper Ads, giving election candies (although they deny..lol) but i guess young voters shud be intelligent to know who is doing the work and who is telling lies (e.g. only coming out during election days..hey, dr kow.. it has been 4 years since last time i saw u personally), or opening ceremony (e.g. the opening of the “traffic jam causing” junction at Neway Puchong Jaya)
要治腐, 换政府! 改国运, 你决定!
Such stupid act committed by BN, especially MCA is not only outrageous and despicable, it is also an insult to the RAKYAT…We must vote against BN to uphold democracy…Teresa, we will back u up all the way!!
This is such a despicable act by the BN and MCA….The voters are not dumb, we’ll support Teresa all the way and deny the BN’s 2/3 majority!!!!!
Outrageous conduct by DBKL and reflects badly on our Prime Minister for all… except opposition, ok?
I really hope such actions will serve to encourage more voters to vote you, out of disgust with their high-handedness.
I have already switched off national television during this campaign period because of their nauseating propaganda. It is unfair that we are unable to buy a decent independent newspaper other than The Sun, which is setting soon.
Wish you greater success in this General Elections, which means, winning the state seat as well.
Dear Theresa,
Don’t get too worked up. From the look of things, I think deep down inside, MCA knows it is a lost cause to attempt to mount an assault on you. I was driving by Old Klang Road and I rarely see any BN flags or posters.
Anyway, I wish you all the best. I have been telling my friends in OUG to vote for you. I highlighted to them your plight and they are equally as disgusted.
Here’s my little take on your competitor and how NST is rooting for her.

Hmmn, even if they are not pleased with those posters and stuff, can’t they actually have the good manners to dismantle it properly. Now the posters look rubbished and spoilt. Who is going to pay for them. What were they doing? Goodness gracious.
Double standards !
1)How about send a bill of claim for damages to Rocket flags and buntings to DBKL for reimbursements.
Sent it through your DAP legal adviser.
Legally, it is a offence by DBKL to remove your campaign material.
It is a case of destruction of private property legally permitted under Election regulations.
You have paid RM5,000= as campaign deposit on 24-2-2008.
2) or Forgive DBKL for its atrocities and Continue to campaign , placed back all the rocket flags and bunting.
Looks like these people cannot differentiate between the country and the party. Or maybe they just conveniently ignore them. But then again, it didn’t surprise us, did he? It seems they are not able to differentiate many things, from race and religion to common sense and obedience.
This shows that somehow, someway, these people are thought and brainwashed from a very young age on what justice means, the perverted version of course!
1)Only Symbol ” Dacing ” was registered ?
2)Did BN component politicians “register their faces” not nominated for use
together with & on BN ” Dacing “symbol ?
3)Political parties “cannot put” up any election paraphernalia in parliamentary and state constituencies where they do not have any candidates contesting.
4)EC secretary Datuk Kamaruzaman Mohd Nor said “only” parties with their candidates standing in the constituencies could put up the paraphernalia and distribute election materials.
5)To a question, he said Barisan Nasional and its components could do so as they are a registered coalition.
>> ….So file a complaint against the BN.
> as provided for under Section 24B(10) of the Election Offences Act 1954.
a)BN can use BN election paraphernalia only.
b)only “a Face “of candidate nominated can be displayed, right ?
>> Only Symbol ” Dacing ” was registered only. Right ?
>> Legally, Najib face, other BN faces cannot be displayed at all by Law. Correct?
>> Did BN component politicians “register their faces” not nominated for use
together with & on BN ” Dacing “symbol ? No ?
Can Barisan Rakyat Legal Advisers check up with Registrar of society & Election Commission on these ?
Since 1984, I doubt they ever ‘register their faces’ for use in all constituencies.
So SPR want to deny us the right to stand together as ‘BARISAN RAKYAT’ ?
Just my 6 sens.
A Legal PARADOX again ?
…
That’s simply outrageous. Anyway, u can be assured of votes from me and my family. Go and fight on
Teresa!
Btw, Carol Chew was featured over ASTRO Awani last night. She said nothing much, except in particular, she attacked your decision to contest in Kinrara, which she claims will distract you from your constituency here in Seputeh. She also claimed that you were absent during nomination here? Is that true? Pls explain.
Dear Teresa,
Good news! This article is now featured in Malaysia Today.
http://www.malaysia-today.net/2008/content/view/3400/84/
Hope more of your constituency readers will be aware of this nasty thing DBKL did.
Teresa,
one consolation is that people in seputeh already knows about you and need no posters to tell them who is the right one to contest. You can win by peoples’s memory and impression. GO ON!
Plain to see the delay in opening is to coincide with the campaigning period. Unless DBKL can come up with better explanation, that’s my interpretation.
Time to vote for Jeff Ooi and the Opposition. Time to negate corrupted BN government who SAPU all from rakyat. Exercise your right now!!
TAK NAK TO HIGH CRIME

Yes, we need the check and balance for good governance.
Please call upon all friends and relatives to vote for the Opposition.
Please do ourselves favour by sending the right candidates to parliment
to voice up for us. Especially Penang and Jelutong voters, we need more
and more of your supports to reject BN parasites in the Parliment.
Please call upon your friends and relatives, vote for the Opposition.
Especially those staying in Penang, please vote for the Opposition. Let
the Parliment have the real voice of rakyat.
i agree with LWT. You have done so much for the people and they know who you are.
You don’t have to “leech” on all this cheap publicity activity to gain popularity. If the person didn’t contribute anything to the construction of the flyover but choose to show up during the opening, this is called “yau gong” i mandarin!
just continue to serve the people and you’ll be rewarded.
While BN material at U-turn before SRJK Tai Thong school blocked our view when me make u-turn. It’s very dangerous if we can’t see opposite car.
SPR must follow the Law … equal level playing field…
a) Political parties “cannot put” up any election paraphernalia in parliamentary and state constituencies where they do not have any candidates contesting.
b) EC secretary Datuk Kamaruzaman Mohd Nor said “only” parties with their candidates standing in the constituencies could put up the paraphernalia and distribute election materials.
1)Only Symbol ” Dacing ” was registered for legal use..
….Najib did not contest in Kepala Batas & Lembah Pantai (Bangsar).
….Why Najib face appear there & elsewhere.. ?
2) ….So file a complaint against Najib ….made a polis report..
…… as provided for under Section 24B(10) of the Election Offences Act 1954.
3) only “a Face “of candidate nominated can be displayed…
…..only Badawi photo can be displayed in Kepala Batas….
>> By Law, Najib face, other BN big faces cannot be displayed at all .
Can Barisan Rakyat Legal Advisers check up with Registrar of society & Election Commission on these ?
Since 1984, no ‘big faces’ were ‘registered’ for use in all constituencies.
Syabas. Barisan Rakyat. VOTE for CHANGE.
