EPCB expresses concern

Posted on Friday, 19-09-2008 by Teresa Media

Y.B. Dato’ Seri Syed Hamid bin Syed Jaafar Albar
Home Minister
Blok D 2, Parcel D,
Pusat Pentadbiran Kerajaan Persekutuan.
Putrajaya

18 September 2008

Dear Honorable Minister,

We members of European Parliamentary Caucus on Burma (EPCB) are concerned at the detention
of YB Teresa Kok, a member of the Malaysian Parliament under the Internal Security Act, which
allows for detention without trial. YB Teresa Kok is also the Secretary of the ASEAN Inter-
Parliamentary Myanmar Caucus (AIPMC), an organization that has been helping us to promote a
free and democratic Myanmar (Burma).

YB Teresa Kok has played important roles in many initiatives and activities on Burma. She has
always been a person of integrity and a proponent of human rights. We find that the allegations
made against her unbelievable as it does not fit the character of the person that we know and
respect.

Therefore, we implore the Malaysian Government to either release her as soon as possible or charge her in court. This would allow YB Teresa Kok an opportunity to prove her innocence against any malicious charges that were made against her.

We trust that the Malaysian Government, which is a member of the UN Human Rights Council,
would not allow any of its citizens to be wrongly detained. We are confident that YB Teresa Kok
will be treated with the utmost respect and dignity during her detention and we hope to see her
released soon.

Thank you.

Yours sincerely,

Glenys Kinnock, Member of European Parliament for Wales in the UK

Silver Meikar, Member of Parliament in Estonia

European Parliamentary Caucus on Burma

28 Charles Square,
London

Let us raise our voices for ISA to be abolished
Let us bank on men’s sanity for ISA to be repealed

I have my simpathy to Taresa as I can feel how she must have been abused by the unprofessional while under detention. Just imagine what happen to the rest of the ignocent citizens detained. Immagine just a normal and unknown helpless citizen being detain just for the sake of investingation.

I am not taking side just for the sake of talking but experienced it myself, only just for one night in the police lockup justified me to hate them so much who I use to work and support during my younger days.

Why can they be more professional. Don’t misuse the power vested upon them. Why can’t they invenstigate without detention. It just simple plain procedures. Not all suspects are guilty and need to be punished even before they are brought to court to justify their action…..

Well I hope more people will come forward to stop this abuse of power.
