RESIDENTS of Taman Tasik Prima, Puchong, want the Education Ministry to approve the building of three schools on a plot of land in their area.<\/h2>\n

The residents are urging the ministry to allow the construction of SJK(C) Yak Chee, SMJK Catholic and a school for autistic\u00a0 children on a 5.2ha plot of land that has already been gazetted by the Selangor government for schools.<\/p>\n

About 50 Taman Tasik Prima Puchong residents held a peaceful demonstration at the site recently.<\/p>\n

Taman Tasik Prima resident Chin Yin Fong, 36,\u00a0 said: “We shouldn’t be made to worry about our children’s future.<\/p>\n

“What we need here are more Chinese schools. With more people moving into the area, there will be demand for\u00a0 Chinese schools,” she said.<\/p>\n

Chin said\u00a0 it was not easy to enrol their children in Chinese schools as there were limited places .<\/p>\n

“Last year we managed to get a place for our daughter at\u00a0 a Chinese school.<\/p>\n

“What about in a few years’ time when my other two children\u00a0 go to school? What happens then?” she asked.<\/p>\n

The state government had applied to the Education Ministry last year to allow the construction of the three schools but it was rejected.<\/p>\n

The state government, represented by its deputy secretary for development Datuk Noordin Sulaiman, said\u00a0 complaints had been received from residents over the shortage of Chinese schools in\u00a0 Petaling district.<\/p>\n

The state exco\u00a0 said there had been a significant increase in the number of Chinese school students in the Petaling district.\u00a0 In 1998, there were 24,518 students in Chinese schools and last year the figure rose\u00a0 to 43,611 students, an increase of 77 per cent over a 13 year period.<\/p>\n

Responding to the letter, Education Ministry secretary-general Datuk Dr Rosli Mohamed said\u00a0 the gazetted land was reserved for SK Taman Tasik Prima Puchong and SMK Taman Tasik Prima Puchong and hence their application for the Chinese schools was rejected.<\/p>\n

Selangor state senior executive councillor and chairman of the Investment, Industry and Trade Committee Teresa Kok said the land had been gazetted as a school reserve and the state government had a say on school allocations.<\/p>\n

Puchong member of parliament Gobind Singh Deo said\u00a0 it was up to the Education Ministry to decide.<\/p>\n

“We have sent all the letters to the various authorities. It is up to the Federal Government to approve the schools. We hope everyone can put aside their political differences and solve the problem,” he said.<\/p>\n

Gobind said\u00a0 he would raise the issue at the parliamentary session next month.<\/p>\n
